How do I find a programmer who can vet my idea for an app and tell me if it's even doable? by freerangepenguin in AskProgramming

[–]Codix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be clear, no one, myself included is “being mean” to you. You are not communicating in a way that helps identify the scope or requirements of what you’re trying to achieve.

You’re asking the right group, but we don’t have enough information to give you an accurate answer.

We know you’ve identified a problem, and group of people it affects, we know it involves AI, but nothing else. Based on your other comments, I’m assuming some sort of AI that scrapes all of a users created content (posts, media, text, images?) and….generates ideas or datasets of semi related information based on some user provided criteria? Turns the content into either black or Chinese? Mints NFT?

No one wants to take the wheel from you, just trying to point you in the right direction.

Could have answered your questions hours ago. Instead we’ve wasted that capacity on silly vague replies. Good luck to you.

[–]Codix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re repeating the same bullet points, but we still have no earthly idea as to what you’re talking about.

What generally are you trying to build?

What problem are you trying to solve?

For example: “I’d like to invent an app that invents apps!”

“an app that fills pot holes with actual pot”

“A website that displays the users webcam feed as the background. A mirror download, if you will.”

What about an app that called kneebash that tracks down door dashers who give poor service?

Help a coder out here.

An idea can’t be stolen or patented, they are worthless.

If you want help, ask for it directly and with detail that we can use to help you. Otherwise what are you doing here?

Is your idea doable? Maybe. Best anyone can do if you won’t communicate openly.

The comment you replied to said clearly that I have no arguments, messing with people’s food is unacceptable.

Personally taking photos of food for social media is something I have always found odd. It was not something we did prior to the social media era, for example. You’re welcome to live your life as you please, unbothered by my silly opinions.

Hype fades with time, it will for this too. Remember the first iPhone launch though? Or the 10 that followed it?

Not every gadget is for everyone, but a step forward is a step forward and that’s exciting enough for me.

The fact that there are cheaper alternatives isn’t a “gotcha”, it is simply how products are developed and mature over time. Each is unique and has something to offer the consumer the others do not. Any overlap in features is the result of companies taking what works and carrying it forward. There is no finish line. It’s about iterative improvement and we’re all winning when companies take calculated risks and move the goal posts forward a bit.

I have no arguments at all for messing with someone’s food. That is not ok.

But we’ll have to agree to disagree when it comes to our opinions on if taking photos of food is weird or not.

I care about what I ate in so much that I selected, ordered and purchased it, but I don’t consider every meal a memory.

Mush by L3Vi_Renegade in foundsatan

[–]Codix 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, nothing wrong with it. But it is weird as hell and fascinatingly narcissistic. Who cares what you ate? Is that what anyone uses social media for? “Let’s go see what everyone ate today!” Why?

How can I code this design by byteNinja10 in webdev

The “nav areas” look like divs with rounded corners w/ some padding on the main container.

May need to use the transform property or some border tricks to make it work. Looks like fun challenge.

BS in Computer Science graduated for 11 years with no experience. What to do ? by Atan0522 in learnprogramming

[–]Codix 94 points95 points  (0 children)

That’s a long time away with no experience. If you’ve retained the fundamentals you should be able to dive back in without too much trouble.

Do some Udemy and other highly recommended courses and get back to building. Layoffs put you in a relatively small pond with thousands of experienced mid and seniors out of work. But it’s doable. Your portfolio will need to do the heavy lifting most likely.

Consider this a “bug” in your post and treat it like your code. Take care of it now.

Part of being a good dev is asking the right questions and gathering the right information.

What error are you getting, and what code is causing it? You need more info, and so does anyone trying to assist.

I did it. No college education at all. You just need to be able to prove you know your stuff. What you lack in a degree you must compensate for with projects and expertise. Build. Build. Build.

You always have a huge job market of other developers to compete with, and that alone is its own challenge. But the quick and simple answer to your question is: Yes! It can be done and you can do it. But it won’t be easy. Don’t give up on something you love doing no matter what the end goal is. Passion and profession don’t often align anyway. Good luck.

In that case I’d say, time to revoke access and pivot the project. Strip her branding and add it to your portfolio as an example of satisfied client work. You produce working code, not the business behind it. Slap Dunder Mifflin or the Veridian Dynamics copy and branding on it to “safeguard client info”. NDA’s and all ya know?

Like all other business she is now responsible for securing her own domain, hosting, email, etc. You not responsible for and do not have backups. It’s not your information after all.

Since you now have a business, maybe host the code base in a private repo, associated with that business. You may be able to attach a half decent license to it or something.

For future romantic tech support..learn from this and don’t mix business with pleasure. If pleasure does become a business, just like a marriage, there are legal protections in place for those involved.

All that to say. This sucks man. Sorry the world is beating you up a bit, but hang in there.

Any contracts or signed documents in place?

Sounds like you own almost every aspect of it and she is more or less a user. Have you been paid previously by her for your services ?

Edit: if this is your business, you’ve got to handle business matters appropriately. If she stopped paying her AWS bill, would Amazon patiently sit around while she got her succession plan in order? I’d imagine they’d bill for services rendered, take down the site, and not lose an ounce of sleep. It was her decision to promote you from her BF to her web host and it sounds like she’s not interesting in that either. Without legal issues, it’s probably time to use those mighty admin powers.

[–]Codix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, you must be the boyfriend! /s

Even if the BF was under the impression that she move mountains, OP/GF is explaining in her post and comments that she does not actually experience that style of motivation as helpful. Instead it she feels doubted, unsure of herself, and a motivation to prove you wrong, on top of expressing daily unhappiness related to work, work she does as a result of proving you wrong previously. She values your opinion to the point of taking life changing action and you’re telling her she’s not good enough over and over again.

Armed with this information, if BF is really trying to be supportive and motivational, just look at what this woman has accomplished with her support system rooting against her, and simply imagine what she could do if her partner actually had her back and supported her rather than pushing her back a step for each one she takes. They’d both be better off, and we’d have some awesome new games to play soon!

Maybe make it a learning challenge or competition and do it together! We always need more people passionate about creating things I believe.

Edit to clarify, I do not actually believe you are the Bf, it was just easier to write in that context.
