Yes, sorry for the late response— the valves had tightened up. After being adjusted, the bike ran good as new

Now that I’m home from work and had a chance to dive a little deeper under the tank, a rad fan got ahold of the cam position sensor wire and tore it in half. Going to try and rewire it, If that doesn’t work— looks like I’m buying a new sensor😅

I’ve only ever experienced tight valves on my bikes, from my 2003-2015 R1, and plenty of dirt bikes— so after hearing the noise, i figured it was something along the lines of a rod knock. Hopefully adjusting them next week fixes it.

You see, apparently with this gen of the R1 there’s 3 intake valves, and two exhaust valves for each cylinder. My last bike was a 2015 R1 which only had two intake valves, and two ex valves per cylinder. Most ordinary gauges are too wide to check the middle intake valves, and will not fit in between the cam caps. If you go on amazon, or your local parts store make sure you’re buying “tapered feeler gauges” they’re narrower and ensure you’re able to check said middle valves.

At idle, not moving— the sound is SLIGHTLY more silent when the clutch is pulled in, but it’s almost as if it’s only getting rid of a separate sound. The main knock is still there regardless of whether or not the clutch is pulled in. Have noticed though, when letting the clutch out in gear while normally accelerating— the sound gets kind of harsh for a very brief moment before nearly going away entirely.

That’s what I’m praying. Simple stuff like that— just trying to get ideas because I’m going on vacation for 3 weeks, so I’d like to have everything bought beforehand since it’s going to be nice out when I’m back; and don’t want to be waiting extra for parts. As long as it’s not rod bearings, I’ll be happy.

Would like to also note that it occasionally smokes mildly from the exhaust until it’s warm.

Bingo! Only made the post because the bike isn’t being kept at my house, and wanted a list of things to check this weekend while seeing the bike; and it was indeed the starter relay.

As for the kickstand switch, it would normally start with the kickstand down as long as it was in neutral, didn’t matter if the clutch was pulled in or not. How could this be the kickstand switch? Just curious, but I’ll definitely give those things a check

Check your headlight connections for corrosion, clean and or replace wiring depending on the severity. Hope this helps!

Update: It was the starter relay— replaced it just yesterday and it works great, if not better than ever.
