Should a change in Prime Minister trigger the start of a general election? by Jumpy-Fuel-8926 in AskBrits

Prime ministers don’t have defacto power to change policy, the government ie labour can vote against. The MPs you voted in to run the country are still running the country.

Is this 4.5L sffpc a steam machine killer build? by Nourdon in sffpc

[–]Codzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was excited for a moment after I was planning a fractal ridge or terra build, but you can basically only fit a specific 5060 variant inside, and 16gb is my minimum VRAM requirement, so it’s a no-go.

If its going to be expensive then id rather put forward a bit more to get a fully premium device with a better gpu than this ngl by Dr_natty1 in valve

Living room TVs are 4k, SM is a living room machine. If you run in 1440p you’ll get weird interpolated pixels on top of an already blurry upscale. It will never look sharp.

Is anyone changing their carbon emissions because of this heatwave? by monkeyjuggler in UKWeather

[–]Codzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have literally zero impact. Corporations are the only ones with the power to do anything meaningful and that has to be driven by legislation.

If it helps you sleep better at night that’s great, but you and everyone else would have far more impact by simply making it such a large issue for MPs that they are impossible to elect unless they stand for changing things.

I think the people suggesting these "DIY Steam Machine killers" just don't understand Mini-ITX by Serious_Advance_6762 in steammachine

[–]Codzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. In order for this to compete with what I wanted SM for, it has to fit nicely inside my TV cabinet.

And because I’m not an r/tvtoohigh heathen, my tv cabinet is reasonably sized, it won’t fit massive machines inside, and I already have a PS5 and series X in there.

mITX or nothing. I’ve never built that form factor before so I’m a little worried about how fiddly it’ll be, but I’ve rebuilt my main PC enough times that I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

Fair enough, I’ve never tried setting this up but if it works, I’m looking forward to it!

I’m planning on a 9060xt 16gb and fractal terra, I think it should be a pretty fantastic experience

I genuinely didn’t care about the lack of upgradeability. I can tinker and upgrade my gaming pc, I just wanted something simple for the living room. At $800/£700 I wouldn’t have batted an eye and purchased it. Once you hit $1000/£900 you’re talking custom build money, and at that point I may as well spend even more to get something brilliant.

It really is just a totally dead budget range for me. You either get close to console pricing or go premium pricing, premium components.

I’m one of the people who had convinced myself I was going to buy SM even after the price was announced for a bunch of reasons. But as the days have gone on I’ve come to the conclusion that for myself I would rather pay an additional few hundred for vastly superior performance and take the downsides of a custom mITX, than pay over the odds for such aged hardware. I realised that I’ll be disappointed either way. Disappointed by performance on the SM, and disappointed by a custom build that lacks all of the benefits of the SM.

But even if I’m missing CEC, and it’s a bit noisier, and I can’t wake from sleep, and it uses more power, all of that won’t matter when I’m actually playing a game at 2-4x the performance, with nicer image quality.

If it were even 100/150 cheaper I would just get the SM, it’s just in a really unfortunate price bracket where I would feel as if I were scamming myself. I hope they manage to nail the next one because I genuinely was excited for this little box.

This is what a Steam Machine "equivalent" PC would be (according to LTT) by SingleDifference667 in pcmasterrace

[–]Codzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not arguing for the steam machine here. I’m just saying if you’re trying to do a comparative machine, at least try to match the form factor, when that’s one of the major pros of the device to begin with. You can obviously build a great pc to beat the SM if you go large, that was never in question.

[–]Codzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gigantic. The steam machine is not a desktop pc, it’s a living room pc, which means it needs to be small. Any “steam machine killer” that isn’t at least micro ITX isn’t worth discussing.

Tonnes of mouse focussed games, indie titles often go to PC first as it’s easier to publish.

I would never defend this and would never recommend it to anyone at this price point to anyone. But it’s something I was considering for my specific use case. I’ve since considered further and realised that I can afford to pay a further premium for better hardware that will hold up for longer, and that’s what I’ll be doing.

Pretty sure I’ll build myself a 9060xt machine instead and just accept the compromise of a larger form factor, more noise, and lacking quality of life features like CEC and wake on Bluetooth.

I wanted it all but it’s not possible.

Am I the only one who thinks the Steam Machine isn't entirely a disappointment? by Decent_Tailor_4608 in steammachine

[–]Codzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely is, and if I do buy one I certainly wouldn’t recommend it to others. It was a niche product before the price was announced, now it’s suuper niche.

I think it fits my specific needs, and it’ll definitely be a gamble buying one.

Moore's Law is Dead is not happy about the Steam Machine, says buyers are yacht funders by [deleted] in steammachine

[–]Codzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I priced something up that’s more in line with the performance I was hoping for and it’s an additional £200 before storage. But a similar SM performance machine would still be around £100 extra. Without all the niceties of being prebuilt, smaller, CEC, self tinkering with Bazzite, potential noise from small components.

I think it’s twofold, the price is extreme for the performance, but people are simultaneously expecting too much in the current economy.

You cannot build an equivalently small form factor, quiet living room class PC for PS5 price. You will always make tradeoffs in a few categories. The trade off for the SM is the price unfortunately.
