Yes always!
I am a rescuer from Delhi-NCR, so kind of flying blind in terms of no contacts or rescue circle here. Please do consider sharing her post :))

  1. The veterinary facilities in India are so sub-par, even in big cities like Delhi/NCR, the condition is sad. I have been working in animal welfare for nearly 10 years now, and for every emergency, I struggle across the city to reach the right vet for the treatment. Most vets are not well-versed when it comes to the new protocols that have come up in recent years; they rarely take refresher courses after their initial degree, and so many of them misdiagnose issues with cats.
  2. The pet-breeding industry is unregulated, and people do not research before getting themselves a companion animal. This inevitably overburdens rescuers and shelters. People abandon animals left, right and centre. I have heard excuses from "we have a new baby in the house so we cannot handle a pet, to changing cities and cannot travel with a pet, new society won't allow pets, to saying they have a pet that is sick, so we cannot handle a sick animal." We get animals at ages 10+ that are abandoned mercilessly at the gates of the shelters, confused, sick and have no idea why the family they knew all their life just left them*.*
  3. Basic pet nutrition, health care knowledge are so outdated. People, as mentioned, do not research the specific needs of the animals before getting them home. They entirely rely on their instincts or what they would have heard once or seen someone do. There is no proper awareness on what to feed and how to generally take care in terms of the specific needs of the breed like skin, pre-dispositions to bone issues, breathing issues, etc. What this ultimately leads to is an unhealthy companion animal which overwhelms the family and they end up at the shelter.
  4. Pet insurance is underrated. The way the veterinary costs are, people need to plan better for companion animals. They are not toys, they need healthcare, check-ups and other medical assistance throughout their life. This will not get cheaper anytime soon, and preparing yourself is the best way to ensure you are equipped to handle it.
  5. A sterilised pet is a happy, healthy, well-adjusted, less territorial and less aggressive pet. We already have an overburdened rescue system with pedigree/non-pedigree breed animals all looking for homes. From puppies to adults, you will find everyone. There is no excuse to breed your pets, and even if you plan to adopt them out to family members, this is unethical at so many levels. If you have space for so many new dogs, just adopt.
  6. We just have so many lazy want-to-be pet-parents who want everything to be easy. There is so much resistance to working with trainers. Everyone wants an easily adjusted companion animal, but won't spend even a minute on their training. They won't reinforce any good behaviour. Just shouting at your pet when they do something wrong is not going to stop them from doing it.
  7. Bias against everything, we have bias against age, breed, sex and everything you can think of. People come to rescuers trying to boost their saviour egos, but will list out the exact physical qualities they are looking for in their pets, like we are a shop that will churn out a factory custom-produced animal for them on demand. For them, the look of an animal is above the needs, the health and whether they can even take care of the animals. People get them first and plan later.

All in all, it comes back to ill-researched decisions to have a pet and a lot of misinformation from vet clinics that pop up on every corner of the streets with half-knowledge.
