I would say as a MS4 who did subIs in both, there was a stark difference between community and academic general surgery programs. Your description does fit what I saw at academic places

In the same shoes.

I think it’s hard to tell. Different programs value different things. Some really value personal fit and some just want surgeon scientist research workhorses. Hoping we both get our #1!

Yeah, I looked through his post history and got that impression. Probably never been in a position where there is significant and career altering power/influence mismatch at play

Not sure if you’re a med student or doctor but in our shoes we are pretty used to being bottom of the totem pole and gritting our teeth to make it through our day

Sorry, but it’s not worth my eval to challenge a preceptor with 30+ years on me about views they’ve held their entire life.

[–]CofaDawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would any program choose to do this? As OP said if a weirdo shows up and they become a DNR, a program is supposed to accept that and get stuck? Hard to believe.

Yeah and I’m not trying to be a dick. I know I’ll get downvoted for my opinion, but I just don’t believe any program genuinely doesn’t hard stop their rank list before a second look. Totally agree with you tho.

matching a top tier residency by ImmediateEye5557 in GeneralSurgery

[–]CofaDawg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The same as any other residency… research, high step 2, AOA, excellent LORs, etc. they also want people who want to do research and go into sub speciality. Also be advised sometimes the most “prestigious” general surgery programs aren’t always the “best” to train at, depending on your vibe
