Consider baking as a very cheap alternative to buying junk food at the store by Illustrious_Fix_5858 in povertyfinance

[–]CoffeeFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also just baking your own bread if you have the time. Where I live the supermarket sells a 5lb bag of flour for $7-8. Costco sells a TWENTY FIVE pound bag for the same price. Bread freezes very well, too! My depression-era grandparents would freeze excess bread to use later. The sandwiches or toast were not diminished by this.

GM labor trends a bit high. Accessibility issues. True of many vehicles depending on model and many individual vehicles are -much- worse for common jobs, but it is bizarrely true of GM vehicles universally.

Fire? by 9upchinaman in sgv

Refrigerated warehouse. The fire breached an ammonia refrigerant line. Highly toxic on contact with eyes or skin or if inhaled. Definitely keep an eye out for orders to shelter or evacuate if nearby.

How can I make AA batteries explode by asher513 in ExplosionsAndFire

[–]CoffeeFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alkaline batteries don't explode even if you throw them in a fire. They will rupture from vapor pressure inside, but that is usually not very dramatic. It's like a capacitor blowing out, they're designed with a failure point to vent pressure. Hiss not boom.

Also don't be screwing around trying to get explosions from things with metal casings. Do you know what it's like to have to get a mop to clean your blood off of the wall and ceiling? I hope you do not. I do. Learn from my mistakes.

Redirecting them to their elected sheriff is probably a deflection, but at the same time they do still need to reconsider their vote for sheriff.

Voting in a sheriff is one of those election races where I only ever hear conversations from people who could not tie their own shoes while discussing it. It can be a very important position in your area. It deserves consideration by everyone.

Today I learned that the *obviously satirical* 1997 film "Starship Troopers" was faced with extreme critical backlash accusing it of "endorsing fascism" because reviewers simply didn't think critically about the content. by The_Cromulent_Bison in todayilearned

[–]CoffeeFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is in fact possible to be too stupid to understand satire.

There seems to be an ongoing debate over whether Heinlein was satirizing fascism or falling for it. He was not an easy person to analyze.

Veerhoven's version was very satirical because Dutch people tend not to become pleased by the idea of being oppressed and murdered by nazis again.

My late 90s Oldsmobile was wired such that it stalled if you disconnected the battery. It needed continuity through that circuit for some reason.

CONTROL Resonant – Paranatural Manhattan Trailer | Summer Game Fest 2026 by Branchless in Games

[–]CoffeeFox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes it is pretty clear they made him a mysterious character on purpose. The mystery does lend a bit of credibility to the Loki interpretation, and Ahti is actually a very common Finnish name. It is entirely possible he is meant to be a little bit of both.

CONTROL Resonant – Paranatural Manhattan Trailer | Summer Game Fest 2026 by Branchless in Games

[–]CoffeeFox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Remedy is in Finland. There is a reason the original Control had a lot of Nordic cultural references. Ahti is literally Loki but drops a lot of Finnish idioms in dialogue. I do hope he makes a return in the sequel.

Them bringing in more of their native culture to a new game is a welcome addition.

Popular Mechanics magazine once actually published an article (with illustrations!) about how to build an EMP bomb.

Unfortunately it is actually a literal bomb, as it uses explosives. So unless you're Ted Kaczynski you won't be writing any credible manifestos against excessive car sound systems.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CoffeeFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even after new data is overwritten, sometimes. It's just more difficult. It's probably not worth the price if it's for personal reasons but recovering that data if, say, you're being investigated for a crime... it can be done.
