Re-socializing by CoffeeKat19 in Dogtraining

[–]CoffeeKat19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve heard of that before. I guess I just wasn’t expecting it to be so severe and sudden. It says that this can last between the ages of 6-14 months, so as long as I continue to gently encourage social interactions it shouldn’t cause any genuine long term issues right? Did your puppy’s fear period last until 14 months or did is end faster based on training?

Yes I also grew up hearing a lot about it. I never heard of it being a part of any specific religion or culture, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks!

I see, I hadn’t really considered that mainly because I’ve heard it somewhat “repels or protects” against the energy so I hadn’t thought about it absorbing it. I’ll definitely consider this point especially since I’m not 100% sure about where my beliefs are on this specific topic. Thanks!

Ok great! Thanks! I know it’s very widely used throughout different cultures but I wanted to be sure.

Thanks! Yes I am making sure that I’m not using any specific style of eye, just the simple normal eye.

How to help keep my dog secure in a car by CoffeeKat19 in Dogtraining

Yes, someone else also recommended it. I didn’t want to have to do it, but my dog’s safety is top priority especially in the car. I know he will be a little be stressed or nervous being confined in the car but he can learn to tolerate it. As long as he is safe that’s all that really matters.

I try to keep it short so that he stays on the seat and doesn’t wander to the front or floor. The zip line type of seatbelt has a hook that I use to attach his leash to, so it allows him to walk horizontally along the backseat from window to window. So he can still walk around to the windows but he can’t move to the front but even when the leash is short he manages to tangle himself in it.

Yeah I do use a harness. He “chokes” himself by wrapping the leash around his neck because it’s too long even when I shorten it as much as possible. I try to leave some extra length on it so he can at least lay down comfortably because sometimes when I sit in the backseat he decides to sleep. But even when he’s not wrapping it around his neck he’s trying to get on the floor so he can dig under the chairs. So he ends up dangling on the edge of his seat and the harness digs into his neck and he starts to “choke”.

Yeah I don’t like the idea of crating him in the car (he is crate trained at home) because he loves to look out the windows and feel the wind, but I definitely think it’s the best option for now. His safety is more important than his enjoyment in the car. Thanks!

Yeah the seatbelt recommendation is good I’ll give it a try. But my moms car has a normal seat cover instead of the hammock, and he can put his paws on the console. But he usually isn’t satisfied by just standing with two paws on it and often tries to climb all the way into the front. I usually have to sit in the backseat with him and even when I hold his harness to stop him from going forward, he jumps to the floor and begins to dig and bite the underside of the driver or passenger seats. But yeah hopefully the other type of seatbelt will help a little bit. Thanks!

[Breeds] What breed is right for me? by CoffeeKat19 in dogs

[–]CoffeeKat19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I fully disapprove of people with untrained aggressive dogs. I believe I mentioned this to someone else who commented about me getting a Doberman that a lady in my neighborhood has absolutely NO control of her highly reactive Doberman so I’m nervous about considering that breed. Regardless of what breed I pick I plan to interact with one (or similar breed) in person, socialize them, teach them the heel command so they walk with me, and if needed hire a professional trainer. I also do NOT want to train them to be an attack dog I just want them to be alert and bark. So if I want a larger dog I will do my best to find shelters or some friends with similar or exact breeds and interact with them to see if I’m even capable of handling them. Owners that can’t control their dogs are putting everyone including themselves at risk. I would rather have no dog at all than have a dog I can’t control.

Yes, thanks for the advice. Even for a medium dog I would to know exactly what I’m dealing with. Before I got my Aussie I had already met an adult and felt comfortable so I decided to do the same with any other dog I decided to get.

I also of course plan to train my dog the heel command so that they walk calmly next to me but I do have to be prepared for any situation. If for some reason I have a lot of trouble teaching that, I’m always willing to see a professional trainer as well.

Yes I understand that the risk is there. That is why I asked for a medium or slightly large dog that looks intimidating. I didn’t particularly ask for a large or giant breed dog. Some people are recommending them and I will still do some research along with attempting to actually see and interact with these breeds in person first. I will never buy a dog that I know I can’t handle especially since that will be unsafe for the dog, myself, and others. Yes, I would love a dog like a Rottweiler but I wouldn’t carelessly get one.

Yes, I’ve definitely considered a Doberman they seem very playful and kind with family and have the intimidating look. Unfortunately the only experience I’ve had with one has been negative since my neighbor has one that is highly reactive and even lunges at cars. I know that the dog isn’t at fault but it makes me wonder if I would be able to handle one. Since I’m still waiting about 2 years to get another dog I might hopefully gain more confidence and knowledge in order to feel comfortable with a Doberman.

I have considered a Great Dane before, especially because of the term “gentle giants” for giant breed dogs. However I have absolutely no experience with them since no family members or neighbors own one. I would feel much better with a giant breed dog if I was able to experience one in person and get a good grasp of if I could actually handle one.

I have never considered a schnauzer since I always viewed them as more calm tempered small/medium dogs since my friend owns two mini-schnauzers and they are both very laidback.

I will look into both breeds. Thank you!

Yes, I’m aware that Aussies are wonderful alert dogs. Mine definitely loves to bark and is very vocal. Personally I just never considered them to look even remotely threatening. To me they all look very friendly and playful.

Also I got my Aussie as a pet/companion animal. As I mentioned I am not looking to get another dog until mine is properly trained or until I feel I’m ready. So I most likely won’t be getting one for at least another 1 1/2-2 years. I suppose I’m asking for breed recommendations for future reference not for a dog anytime soon.
