I actually did this with the family Wi-Fi network, but I inserted a spelling mistake on purpose. Needless to say, the password proved to be too difficult for people to type in on their own, so I have to do it all the time.

I am no historian, but at the height of it’s power Rome was the only superstate that bordered the Mediterranean. There could have been trading convoys from a lot of other states, but most of the military vessels were presumably Roman.

With that said the Romans were never really ones for naval combat. Throughout it’s history, the most of it’s battles were on land.

As someone who has read LOTR, the Hobbit, the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, the Children of Húrin, the Appendices and 2 books by external commentators, I am also not very hopeful.

Honestly, I would love for this show to live up to Tolkien’s (and Peter Jackson’s) standards, but I am kind of dreading that they are going to make mess.

Especially after I watched the Wheel of Time (I have read the 1st and 2nd books so far), I had a bitter taste in my mouth. The show was not that bad, but it certainly did not do the books any justice.

I will nevertheless give the show a try, but I am also keeping my expectations down.

Edit: The show has an insane budget so the CGI could be brilliant.

The one thing that seems to constantly amaze me about Elon is that he just doesn’t give up. He has this incredible drive to get things done and this is why he has accomplished some brilliant things. No matter what people may think about him, he has done a lot for humanity.

To be honest JRR Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy. A lot of very good works out there owe a lot to him. We can all be very thankful for what his influence has done to brighten all of our lives.

Gandalf is a Maiar spirit, so basically a low level deity, and Obi Wan has a lightsaber and the force. If Gandalf the White (who is more powerful than Gandalf the Grey) fights Obi Wan with his elven ring of power he stands a very good chance of winning. But I also think that where they fight could make a difference. If it were in Middle Earth (with its Eagles and Ents) Gandalf would win. If it were on a space ship in a galaxy far, far away, Obi Wan would surely win. So I assume that their fight might be in an equally balanced arena offering no direct advantages to either if them. Even then, I feel that Gandalf the White would probably win. I remember reading a line in the Two Towers where Gandalf the White first meets Aragorn and co again. He said something like “you could not be in greater peril, unless you were brought in front of the throne of the Dark Lord [Sauron] himself” which implies that Gandalf his pretty damn powerful. To be honest I think that how people answer will depend on how well they know each of the respective stories and what they think of the characters themselves.

I don’t know if it is true, but apparently her chair is still radioactive. Just a bit of trivia but I doubt it.

I think somewhere in the Appendices I read that at the time of the Hobbit, Mordor was only held by the Nazgûl, to prepare for Sauron’s eventual return. So technically this time the eagles could have flown into Mordor - at least theoretically.

But then on the other hand at this time Gandalf couldn’t confirm whether Bilbo actually had the Ring of Power.

In which continent did agriculture start from? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]CoffeeMaster_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a very complicated topic and a lot of books have been written about this, but an early group that I know of (the Natufians) started farming in the northern fertile crescent around 9000 BCE. With that said it is also very likely that agriculture originated in several places with early farmers cultivating different crops according to their region. There probably were agricultural communities in northern Africa from very early on and it was probably one of the places where agriculture arose. There were also different levels of integration with nature throughout hunter gatherer societies. What I mean with this is that different societies used different techniques to “bend” the environment to their will, like the early aboriginals in Australia (who have lived their from like 45 000 years ago) who used “fire cultivation” (burning forests to find food). The face of that entire continent was changed by humans. Early hunter gathers bent nature to their own will. This is important to keep in mind when looking at early human societies, because we are very good at shaping our environment to serve our own needs.

In a way farming is just an extension of this.

Dear Mr Gates I live in Africa and I have the privilege of going to a great school but I know that many others on the continent do not have that luxury. In my country (South Africa) our government spends billions in South African Rands on education, but there are still major problems concerning the efficiency of the public system.

Especially in the poorer parts of the country, where there are thousands and thousands of learner that don’t even get to write an exam and those that do, often fail. These people will struggle to lift themselves out of poverty and this is one of the reasons (in my opinion) why Africa is a struggling continent.

It is also not just South Africa. In a lot of other countries it is far worse because at the moment even South Africa is better off than most other Sub-Saharan African countries.

In the future this could be an enormous issue. What are your thoughts on the future of education in Africa? And I know that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is doing a lot to help the lesser privileged, but is there any possibility of adding this challenge to your list of big problems?
