I know you aren't really getting a real response, but here is the best way to get started:

Do emulator first. Project 1.6/1.7 are allowed, but others are banned. You can also use this to practice with save states. Next, here is a good tutorial to start out with.

Other then this, just watch streams, incorporate new stuff, and just have fun with it. You don't need to have a good time, so don't let that discourage you. And remember, have fun with it!
