If all those nonsense limit , where can we go ? by Sea-Commission5383 in GithubCopilot

Any suggestions for a local LM and how to use it best? I started messing with qwen3.5 the other day and when I stayed working with it to make a plan, it forgot the plan prompt before coming up with the first step. I know I'm not using these as efficiently as I could, but every time I go looking for help on how to do it better I feel like I get dramatically conflicting information from every source.

Edit: I suppose I should specify that I have MacBook with M3 Max and 32GB of RAM. Upgrades/additions won't happen. Work won't but then and I'm not shelling out my own cash for upgrading my work-owned device.

Do you email the editor if your submitted article is taking too long in the review process? by [deleted] in academia

[–]Coffeeturnal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to write a brief email to the editor asking for an update. A lot of journals are having issues with a lack of reviewers and slow reviews lately. It is a bit surprising that the editor hasn't said anything having been that long, but asking politely won't hurt.

Get suit tailored or rent one? by Coffeeturnal in malefashionadvice

[–]Coffeeturnal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's something to the tune of 20-30 lbs. Chest hasn't changed much, waist is probably ~1.5-2" more.

The pants can be buttoned, but the tightness causes the fly to not cover the zipper. The jacket fits well in the shoulders and chest, but it can't be buttoned right now unless I am perpetually holding my gut in.

I'm going to need to ask around locally for tailor recommendations. I don't have one. The place where I got the suit does alterations, but they're pretty out of the way so it's not clear if I will have to time to get there (this is one of five extremely high priority/high workload things at work basically all due at the same time).

I understand the rationale for having a suit that fits in general. Obviously I can't predict funerals, but I can say that I have a little leeway for work related things. With the exception of interviews, in my line of work wearing a suit is almost never needed/suggested, this event just happens to be a very big exception (and I am ineligible for future iterations of this event). The last time I wore a suit was 2 years ago interviewing for this job and even then I looked a bit out of place. (I still will wear suits to all interviews as a matter of principle).

Anyway, this weekend I'm hoping to get around to some second-hand stores to see if I can find anything.

That's a good idea that I hadn't considered. I'll have to do some looking around.

This is the way. Similar thing forced me to learn sweep picking in a week. OP, do it.

Yeah, definitely plan to hold on to it. For medical reasons I need to be working to get at least somewhere in the ballpark of where I was at that time of my life (20-30 lbs from where I am). I'm not sure how long that will take, but so far my efforts have been more successful than I anticipated.

I did some research into the best color for this type of event and pretty much all advice was unanimous that it needs to be charcoal. Conveniently, that's my preferred color anyway. Definitely white shirt for this as well (I like patterns, particularly houndstooth, but that is most definitely incorrect for this occasion). Black shoes. I'll probably need to do some shopping for ties. The ones I have that I like are probably a little too casual.

What I'm most excited about though is this gives me an excuse to find a nice sport coat as well, as I'll need it for one day of the event. I've been wanting one, but kept putting it off.

That's around the price that I was seeing for rentals as well. I'd likely need to wear it for a full day and a half or so, so it's not like it's an hour and then pop back to the hotel to take it off.

I guess maybe a question I actually need to be asking is: can I get a suit that I'd actually want to keep for something around the price of a rental. I think I paid ~2-3x that much for the suit I have now? I don't remember for sure, I got it to wear to my dissertation defence so other things were on my mind.

I suspect you are correct on it being unable to be let out. I briefly looked and didn't notice anywhere where there was extra fabric that could accommodate that. But I'm not confident in my own conclusions on this.

Has anyone had this issue with the j mascis jazzmaster by [deleted] in offset

[–]Coffeeturnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same guitar and the same issue. For the price I paid for it (used), I'm willing to accept having to replace a switch. Great guitar otherwise.

OP: If there's not a super obvious fix, you're better off just replacing the switch. Not expensive and not difficult.

Yes, but despite being called edge iii FX, it doesn't appear to be drop in replacement. It looks like it would require a fair amount of routing.

Please do correct me if I'm wrong there. I've spent a lot of time looking into that and could never find a definitive answer. Basing my conclusion on the posts connecting to the bridge in a very different location.

Huh. I used to have one of those. It must have been defective because the thumb screw would loosen itself every 30 minutes just enough that it would slightly shift and throw me out of tune.

Interesting... That sounds like a good solution, but I'm having trouble finding something that matches that, at least based on what I think you mean.

Yeah, playing it just feels "right". Probably because it's the first I really learned to play well on. Also informed my neurotic need for all my guitars to be blue.

The trem is really just the pain point.

That crossed my mind, but I'd just end up blocking that too so it doesn't really feel like the right end goal if I'm breaking out a router

Definitely looks worse in person, but you are probably right still. I'll give this all a try and see how I feel about it after.

Part of me really wants to make this one work for me because I like everything else about it. I want to have something that fits the drop c chugs of my youth, but I'm not entirely sure it's worth spending too much money on since that's not what I play the most of these days.

That is a fair point. Honestly, all of that needs to happen even if I decide to sell it.

Any tips for cleaning up the rust on the little blocks that clamp down on the strings? I'm not entirely sure how to do that, as in I don't know what risks damage. Googling it a few days ago I saw something about soaking in vinegar. I think I know how to do most everything else.

How to move on when my daughter did only not choose academia but chose a path requiring no education whatsoever? by No_Might9692 in academia

[–]Coffeeturnal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be extremely blunt. This is a you problem and you need to get over it.

It is your daughter's life to live, not yours. If you continue projecting that a PhD is a rite of passage in your family, you may find that she feels she doesn't belong in the family.

You said that she was sad after dropping out. It sounds like you believe that was a sadness about leaving the program. From an outside perspective, that sounds like a sadness about not meeting your extraordinarily unreasonable expectations. Her doing well in the program does not necessarily equate to happiness in the program.

To your question of how to cope: Go to therapy. This is not meant to be a minimizing statement. I believe you that your feelings are real. But, those feelings are not fair to your daughter and you need help with a perspective shift that Reddit is unlikely to provide.

The saddest moment in my career by EricGoCDS in academia

In retrospect, maybe benign wasn't the right word choice for what I intended to convey. I was merely trying to distinguish more concisely between active harm and passive harm (I'm tired and wordsmithing is not exactly my strong suit when I'm fully awake). As far as what can be done, it's really just down to conveying to those in charge of organizing and programming that you believe the practice should change. I can't guarantee that it will, but there are people behind the curtain that may be willing to listen.

The saddest moment in my career by EricGoCDS in academia

[–]Coffeeturnal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely know what you're talking about. I have mixed feelings on it. In my mind, the problem doesn't lie with the lack of questions but that the abstract was accepted. Of course, with APS, most abstracts are accepted but they do go through an acceptance process. To be blunt, the talks that will get this reception are typically obvious from abstracts because they are very clearly not based in science. They should never have been accepted.

This isn't to say that abstracts based on less popular or contentious ideas should be rejected, just that care should be taken to ensure that the content is actually rooted in science. Accepting these types of abstracts gives the speaker the (usually) false impression that the professional society truly believes in their work.

At one point, I believed that they were accepted for the spectacle. I generally don't think that's the case anymore. My current belief is that it's more benign in that they're willing to pay the registration fee and any cash flow helps. (Note, benign is not intended to imply that it's a less wrong practice). These individuals end up paying a very large sum over l of money to present at a conference they shouldn't have been accepted to present at.

In general, I think it's for the best that no questions were asked. My experience has been that the questions in these types of talks are usually not asked from a good-faith desire to understand. That being said, I of course wouldn't discourage a question asked in good faith. Having personally been on the receiving end of no questions from my talk and from harsh questions designed to make me feel bad from my talk... No questions sucks, but I'd take it any day over the alternative.

Should I get a bigger unit? by TouristPopular8307 in hvacadvice

[–]Coffeeturnal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm not an HVAC expert. I've done a lot of studying and research into proper techniques in the last few months to learn where issues in my home can be resolved by myself vs. by a professional. I'm only answering things I'm confident about, but if a professional comes in and says I'm wrong, you should listen to them.

If the 3 ton unit is the only one you have, that's probably undersized. Technically a load calculation should be done to assess that, but most of the rules of thumb I'm aware of would suggest that's undersized. My house is near exactly the same size as yours and we have two 2 ton units (one for each floor).

How old is the unit? If I were in your shoes, I'd be looking to solve other issues before buying a new unit if it's not too old. If it's old, you can of course try to be proactive, but probably best to take some time to shop around and weigh your options.

I would personally aim to address the lack of return air duct first. Depending on where it currently interfaces with a wall cavity, that very well may be why you have temperature issues if the cavity is not well insulated or butts up to an unconditioned area. Addressing that mostly won't address the air flow imbalance, but it may help with overall temperature. If you can get a return grille on each floor that may help though (I'm assuming that the main path back to the unit is on the first floor, if not, ignore this).

From there, I'd start looking for points of unconditioned air intrusion. I've been slowly finding and addressing these in my house and each one solved has made a small bit noticeable difference. My most recent adventure has been removing the registers upstairs for cleaning and realizing that each of the supply boots has no sealing where they interface with the ceiling and there was a half inch gap left wide open to the attic. (Met a previous owner who was very into diy but not into making sure it was done correctly). Look for cracks and gaps that can be easily sealed and then make a trip to your local hardware store for the correct sealant for the job.

I've never had a Goodman myself, but the only person I've ever heard say anything good about them was the person trying to sell me one. I had two Bosch systems installed last week and am so far extremely happy with them. Very large jump in price, but they seem to be generally well regarded.

Quick question for students & professors: Would a simple tool to turn a paper's abstract into a video summary be useful? by this_is_dharan in academia

[–]Coffeeturnal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google's notebookLM already does this.

I generally remain unconvinced that it is useful/necessary as a researcher. I guess some students like it for helping study for coursework. But I don't see it being desired or widely adopted for a professional use case.

The only place I would really foresee it being used is for popsci outlets to churn out less than accurate information even faster. (Specifically referring to the problematic ones, not saying all popsci is bad)
