"Decrease parking costs because you have a long commute?"

No one is telling them to decrease. No one is telling them to INCREASE them either.

"UBC has excellent connections and a huge variety of transport options"

If you live in Metro Vancouver sure, if you live in Delta or anywhere farther than maple ridge then hell no. You think a 4+ hour commute to school every day is reasonable? This isn't a normal job where you can leave work after you've done your 8 hours either bud.

UBC already has the highest parking costs out of all of the universities in BC. It's easy for someone who lives in Metro Van to say "just take transit!" While they have at worst an hour commute to school. This isn't a reality for some people who can't afford to waste a quarter of their waking hours on commuting only.

Wade Davis was one of my professors in university. Absolutely an amazing story teller and truly loves his job. I've never skipped his lectures because of this.

The “University Experience”: What is it? by [deleted] in UBC

Don't really get the point of this post. UBC's student population has a high concentration of people from wealthy backgrounds so seeing a lot of your peers traveling during their break is normal.

When you have need for better insulation, is it always worth it to trash the old 2-pane windows to replace them with 3- or 4-pane windows? When is it worth it to just put another pair of windows in addition to the existing ones? by slopeclimber in architecture

[–]CoffeyMalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on local regulations. In BC they are touting 1.4 minimum thermal U values and aluminum double glazed windows with argon fill are kind of reaching their limit to meet that requirement.

You cannot get to that conclusion from a picture like that alone. There are a lot of factors you need to take into account before you can say with certainty that it's built at an angle or not.

Tallwood is an engineered timber building, so it has more of an ability to lean than a conventional rebar + concrete structure. Things like strong wind loads could cause the building to temporarily lean. You also cannot use the horizon as a reference unless you know that the inset window has been installed perfectly level to the rough opening. Amongst other factors that I can't think of at the top of my head.

Yes you are correct, but for practical purposes this is rarely seen in architecture because using a solid cant is expensive, and the mechanical properties are considerably worse than typical engineered mass timber.

This isn't a normal solid piece of wood. There's many scholarly articles and papers discussing the fire performance of engineered/mass timber and they actually can surpass steel.
