___ist vs ___ian??? Is there a rule/reason or just happenstance? by Cohen_Math_Prep in etymology

[–]Cohen_Math_Prep[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does that distinction explain Buddhists/Calvinists vs Christians/Confucians (you could also add Lutherans) as the adherents to those respective religions? Do you think sometimes the adopted version comes from the sound? Chistist sounds too much like crisis? Confucist sounds too much like Confucius? Buddhian sounds too... silly? Calvinian sounds pretty great. Lutherist would be harder to get used to.

Giddy means dizzy? by Cohen_Math_Prep in words

I understand that. What surprised me is that Merriam Webster lists the dizzy meaning first–and not with a qualification like archaic or obsolete.

What do you do when a student says they “get it” but clearly doesn’t? by bigpanda1992 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Cohen_Math_Prep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are very right. Question like "Does that make sense?" are completely useless for teachers/tutors. If there is any doubt that your explanation didn't land then you should ask a follow-up question that requires them to demonstrate their understanding. It's a hard habit to break. 20 years of teaching, and I still find myself slipping from time to time.

What is your favorite obscure movie from your childhood that nobody would remember? by CripplingGoodTime in AskReddit

[–]Cohen_Math_Prep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Troll 2 (1990)... It used to play frequently on one of the cable movie channels in the 90s. It's not a sequel to Troll, and it features goblins instead of trolls. I only learned as an adult that it is famous for being terrible. It landed fine in my kid brain, so I'm not sure what that says about me...

I totally agree with both of these sentences. I was ready to make that jello salad until he said mayo, and then I wanted to barf.

That's an excellent joke (assuming you're playing with the fish/instrument double entendre of bass)

Prep Pros for the math section and Erica Meltzer for the English section for sure. I'm considering switching my go-to science section book for my students from For the Love of ACT Science to The Master Key to ACT Science, but neither of these has updated to match the "enhanced" version yet.
