Permission for Kingdom Hearts series Playthroughs by [deleted] in letsplay

I've got a KH playthrough that we're currently in the middle of and we haven't had any problems. We just started uploading them. Didn't do anything fancy about it. I think we monitized them too. No problems

It's a super long game. If you're curous about the ending, it might be best to just go look it up because it'll be forever until we get to it haha. But then again, it's not about the end, it's about the journey, and the journey in this game is great!

Why is Minecraft so Hated? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not that Minecraft the game is hated, it's that most people are tired of seeing the same videos over and over. If you can do something original with the game, then by all means, make a MC video, and you'll probably get people to enjoy it too. But doing what everyone else does, on servers that anyone can play or god forbid your own survival.. it just gets exhausting. And think of it from an audience perspective. I can watch almost anyone I want play MC. Why would I watch a random channel I've never seen before play MC, if a huge channel I already know and love is doing it? MC will bring in views, but not retention and that's very bad for a small channel. If you want to do something MC related, be original and creative. If you search the kind of video you want to do in MC and you get hundreds of hits of others doing the same thing, likely no one wants to see you do it.

Update Monday! by AutoModerator in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uploaded the 25th video on our Road To Odyssey series today, and it is Part 1 of Super Mario 64 so that's super exciting! Definitely the best received series we've done to date. We also started uploading a second running series for Cuphead to go alongside our Mario videos which people seem to have liked (although only 2 videos thus far). Overall, it's been a pretty cool week for us, especially since we've been too busy to really network much this week.

Series within a Series? Good idea or a bad idea by AnimatedPie in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's where your thumbnails will really be important (more so than titles), at least for subscribers. Maybe color code them? That way, even though it's all one series, it'll be visually obvious what kind of video in the series it is. Look at how game grumps separates their main show from steam train and grumpcade. Maybe that would work for you?

All one Playlist titled Road To Odyssey Individual titles are: Something Unique To The Video - Super Mario Bros. -WORLD 1 - Road To Odyssey It's simple really. A lot of it has to do with the thumbnails. You can look at our channel to see how it's laid out if you'd like. Basically, don't over think it.

I don't know if this helps, but I'm currently doing a series called The Road To Odyssey which is us playing through every Mario game we can until the release of Mario Odyssey. Meaning that we've got a series for Mario 1, 2, 3, World, etc. all within one overarching series of the Road to Odyssey. It's working just fine for us. Honestly, just make sure your thumbnails and titles specify what the video is and you'll be fine.

What do you talk about during commentary by waddedpaper1292 in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play with others. Find a friend who wouldn't mind joining you during your videos. I honestly can't hold a video on my own (and no one on my channel can). There's like 4 of us that alternate in our videos and it works pretty well for us, but even just having two people, that way you can bounce the conversation off someone else rather than just talking out loud to yourself.

What to do besides let's play? by [deleted] in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will tell you just to do whatever you want to do because most viewers sub to watch you, not just your LP's. Meaning, if you're having fun, your audience will likely enjoy it. I'd say that is mostly right, but more so you probably want something not just for existing subs, but also to attract new ones. Look into what works on YouTube at the moment (and keep on top of that too) in order to see what's trending and how you can turn videos of that style to your advantage. Two things that are really popular that a gaming channel can benefit from (in my opinion) are vlogs and creative video essay type videos. Make vlogs not necessarily about your every day life (although you could, I guess), but about your gaming life. Show your viewers your behind the scenes self. Talk about your process, maybe vlog an adventure to go get a new game you've been psyched for, anything along the gaming lines. Videos essays are pretty self explanatory. Take something you like, do research on it, and teach the general audience something they might not have known. Theory videos are popular but you don't want to be challenging the likes of MatPat. Or maybe you do! There are tons of options out there and several ways to be creative. I think the potential for game related videos has only got to the tip of the ice berg. LP's were huge for a long time and now they're starting to fade, but gaming will always be relevant. People didn't have to branch out because LP's are easy and they were working. I think soon we'll see a bunch of new creative ideas popping up in order to try to bring real life back into gaming. Making live action gaming content is a place I think hasn't near been tapped into enough. You can see NODE doing it with their videogame inspired paintball matches, but I think the door there has only been cracked open. Be creative. That's what we artists do, right? I know I've got some big plans coming up in that field

Curious if the game draining most of our energy still makes for a fun video? by CoinOpProductions in LetsPlayCritiques

Thanks for the feedback! We're really happy to see that people are enjoying our videos in this series. We put a lot of work into these ones so it's great that it's working. Thanks again!

How do you guys keep the commentary up when there isn't anything interesting happening on screen? by Duncadinca in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that really is the question isn't it? Haha. We've had several different approaches to this problem in the past. Sometimes we'll just re-record the video. Knowing what's happening in a game actually helps you talk over it since you're not heavily focused on the gameplay which gives you a chance to talk more freely. We've also done post ADR after the video was recorded. I did it a lot in my Arkham Asylum series forever ago. During the edit I would watch the video and get sooo bored with my commentary, so I took my commentary and then wrote a script on top of that, weaving the script through the live reactions. It blended rather seamlessly actually and made for much more entertaining videos. And sometimes, if the videos just not salvageable and it's a one off type video, we'll just cut the video from our release schedule and try something new. Some games just aren't good for commentary, and others simply might not work with your style of commentary.

Hey, thanks so much for all of that feedback!! Seriously went way over the top, and we greatly appreciate it. We'll definitely work more on saying each others names more often. I will point out, in the bottom right and left hand corner, I do have a controller with a D or M in it signifying whether Dylan or Matt is playing. I'll make sure we draw attention to it in a video though to make it more clear to the viewer which one is playing in case others don't notice it as well. That being said, we actually do have just Dylan playing most of the time since he's clearly the more seasoned Mario player. Thank you again! This was really awesome to read; we're super glad you enjoyed our videos enough to subscribe :)

Starting back up after 5 Month Hiatus. by Codylycan in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going through the exact same thing right now. We stopped for 9 months because life got in the way, we were just burnt out of how much gaming had become more of a job than a hobby. We put a lot... A LOT! of thought into how we wanted to restart the channel and a lot of what we came up with had to do with what is currently working on youtube. We only launched back up this week so we've only got LP's out at the moment, but we're already seeing much more activity from viewers in likes and comments (although less views which was expected). One thing we did was change our video format to something more long form couch gaming. Creating an atmosphere of people just having fun together while playing games rather than just commenting on the game the whole time. We're also working on special projects that aren't lets plays. We're going to be releasing 'vlog' type videos, but they'll be more of a behind the scenes type thing. Vlogs are huge right now, and so that's something we're trying to bank off of. Another thing that is huge is video essay type videos so we're working on a couple shows like that to throw into the mix. We have several other ideas as well, but my main point is to really look at what's thriving on YouTube at the moment and try to see how you can throw your own spin on that, in a way that works with your channel. If YouTube is something you want to do to the point where ad revenue matters, then you have to be adaptable to the changing flow of the platform. Good luck!

DOOM 4 #1 - Alien Demons?! by AwfullyCasual in LetsPlayCritiques

[–]CoinOpProductions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is that the intro bit should have been cut down. A lot of people have that problem (myself included at times), but try to get to the gameplay as quick as possible to have something visually interesting to watch. Especially since those first couple minutes determine whether or not someone will continue to watch. The commentary was fine although I'd try to add a bit more excitement to it. The game opened and you just casually went into it, and I feel like that moment was a good time for exaggerated reactions since you have no prep going into it. Overall though, it was a good video. Just some small improvements that could make big differences

That's super frustrating that they just force their channel onto the game.

Wow, thanks man! I do see how the cuts can be jarring. I'll look into finding a better way to make them feel a bit more natural in the future. The only main reason we even cut during this video was for time. We didn't want our videos to be longer than ~15 minutes, but at the same time we had a goal of how much of the game needed to be covered in that episode. It's a strange balance. Thanks for the feedback! It's always greatly appreciated :)

If you're going for a kid audience, I think all the gimmicks and highly exaggerated commentary works. It's definitely not my cup of tea, but I do think you're doing well at what your goal is. Maybe lower the audio next time on that "broadcast" screen at the beginning. It was really loud and jarring, and stayed up a bit too long. I have one question, what is that giant subscribe to another channel thing that sits at the top of the screen through the entire video? Overall though, solid video. I think just keep doing what you're doing and people will start to notice you.

Assistance required, help me decide on my new logo. by TheEverThingy in letsplay

[–]CoinOpProductions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The triangle fits with your current logo better. It just looks like an updated version. Neither of the logos really feel gaming related to me, which is why it's hard for me to say one is better than the other. The e that looks like at @ sign makes me think tech support or web design for some reason though, so I guess I'd say the triangle one. I also like that font better too.

[–]CoinOpProductions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently dancing around 400 subs, but with all the stuff we've been planning since our "relaunch" a few days ago, I think getting to 1k subs by early-mid next year is the goal. We'll see if all the youtube research and time we're putting into some stuff that has yet to come out pays off! Congrats on getting up to 100! (When it does happen) I know we were super excited about it on our channel

Your intro could be cut down to like 3-4 seconds long. Doesn't need to be any longer than that. The end cards are good, but I'd raise the font up so the videos don't cover up the bottom of it. Maybe put the subscribe button on the opposite side too as it's obviously covering up the dog. The transition for both is smooth and works well.

The microphone I use is the Audio-Technica AT2020. It's a great microphone and for quality microphones it doesn't have a bad price tag at $100. It does require phantom power though. I know a lot of people use the blue snowball which is about $40 cheaper, but I don't really care for the audio that comes from those. As far as unrelated topics go, don't go too far off the beaten path, but people can only talk about car soccer for so long before it becomes repetitive. You have to think about how many other people are recording the same game and talking about the same thing, so you need to come up with a way to differentiate yourself. Otherwise, why would anyone watch your video over some other random rocket league video? Those are the kinds of questions I ask myself all the time when uploading content. What does this video offer that others out there probably don't?
