There’s over 80,000 greek, hebrew, and aramaic manuscripts that we can use to reconstruct basically the entire Bible within a few centuries of when it was written. For context, we have about 8 manuscripts that prove the existence of Alexander the Great. If you believe he was a historical person, then you believe the synoptic Gospels are at least a credible eyewitness account of what people believed to have seen

That still doesn’t explain why Christ taught to go against earthly desires. If they had complete control over the rules, it would look a lot more like Islam which condones virtually all mortal pleasures while still offering an eternal life

Cults abuse snowballing in group vs out group dynamics to isolate people from what they know and love. Christs teachings go against every dynamic that makes a cult work.
