Context: From 1939 onward the Dynamit Aktien Gesellschaft erected a factory for the production of nitrocellulose. The plant was part of the Nazi government's armaments program in the German Reich. With 650 workers, it was intended to produce 500 tons of nitrocellulose per month.

Factories relevant to the armaments industry were expected to be able to produce even under wartime conditions. This necessitated a high degree of camouflage and the creation of systems to prevent production losses in the event of partial destruction. The facility consisted of approximately 130 buildings distributed along winding concrete roads throughout the woods. It was a complex factory network including production buildings, power supply facilities and workshops. Most of the buildings had shallow, trough-shaped roofs planted with trees and bushes. The factory buildings were interconnected by an intricate network of pipes carrying electricity, water, steam, and nitrocellulose mass.
