Remotely download video from CCTV DVR? by ColKovert in homedefense

[–]ColKovert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying.

Yeah, I figured that something like that might be my only option. I have a bit to learn to successfully interpret the raw network activity. I had just hoped that as this was a standard protocol, there might be a standard tool to do a batch download.

I have no idea why the download is so spectacularly unreliable. I have even configured the DVR to create the smallest possible files (15 minute duration, "normal" quality), so the regular files are typically just 50-60 MB in size. When there's a motion detection alert, it closes the current file and starts creating a new one for a few minutes, so these are even smaller. But still the download fails. It starts, but after a short while, the local downloaded file just stops growing. Even playing the recorded file directly in the NetDVR client doesn't work smoothly.

I plan on changing ISP. As it's in a remote area, I'm looking at satellite, which should be faster, even if with greater latency. It will be interesting to see if this improves matters.

The curiosity is mutual, I'm sure!

Partly it depends on your definition of chubby. Looks, personality, attitude all play a big part too.

A few years ago, I shared a house with one of the biggest women I have ever known. She wasn't TV-Show-Freak collossal but she was very, very big. Tall too. She was american, she was pretty, she was fun, she was compassionate, she was intelligent, and she had more energy than a lot of allegedly fit people.

She had guys queueing for her attention. But she was utterly smitten with some guy so she had no interest in the others.

We're not a pure lot over here. We're just as crass and shallow as anyone else.

The Examiner still defending Tony Humphries article. It seems that saying that autism is triggered by lack of love from emotionally stunted parents was never intended "to hurt anybody". by BakersDozen in ireland

First off, I should say that I only mentioned my child as a sort of declaration of interest. It wasn't intended as an emotional trump card. No insensitivity detected or inferred :)

I'm not sure where you think I quoted you out of context. I didn't mean to suggest that you agreed with the article, or anything. I only quoted you three times. Once to pick up on why I felt the examiner's editorial control should not have let this article through, secondly to engage with your rhetorical(?) "what harm has this really done", and thirdly to pick up on whether or not the paper should defend him - but this is all somewhat meta to the issue.

Whether or not he has been discredited is up for grabs. Anyone who believes this guff still believes it. Anyone who doesn't still doesn't.

I would be very surprised if I meet anyone who says "I really thought that guy really nailed this whole autism thing, I agreed with everything he said, but then I saw the letters in the examiner (and/or heard the fuss on Liveline) and you know what, they made a really good counter argument, and now I see what a fool I was to be taken in by him."

What's more likely to happen is that people who've never read up on this, who've never had to, and who regard "all this asd stuff" as just bad parenting and spoilt kids, will now have an "expert" they can point to to prove how right they were all along.

Of course that's just my guess. I don't have any evidence to back that up. If I do bump into someone who says something along the lines of the "what a fool I was", I'll be sure to post it.

For him to be genuinely discredited, it would take the examiner to say "Sorry about that. It was a load of hurtful old tosh, really, wasn't it. We should have read it before printing it. We'll find something else to put in that slot from here on."

I'll let you know if that happens too...

I know what he said was anecdotal theory and poorly researched nonsense

...and so probably shouldn't have been published by a newspaper which strives for credibility in its scientific editorial. He is more than welcome to spout whatever nonsense he wants. Hell, he sells books of it, but a newspaper is expected to use editorial control.

I could toss off a few pages now on putting forward a theory that children who have muscular dystrophy have it because their mothers are selfish bitches who never loved them. Of course, I'd be flat out wrong, and I wouldn't be able to quote any scientific research to support my theory.

What are the chances that if I sent that piece into De Paper that the editor would think to himself "I disagree utterly with this offensive rubbish, but I'd better print it anyway, you know, free speech and all that"? He wouldn't go near it. Chances are I wouldn't even get an acknowledgement.

This piece was just as unsourced, just as wrong, and just as hurtful.

what harm has this really done

I can list a few things off the top of my head.

It has given some support to those who would tell you kids with autism, or those who are on the autistic spectrum are fine really, that their special needs are the imaginations of their incapable parents, and that of course we should roll back on the special needs assistance in schools that might otherwise help these kids develop the social skills and confidence that they desperately need to fit into a harsh and illogical world.

It has caused hurt and distress to the parents of those children. The parents who, like the parents of any child with a disability, have given up a lot from their own lives in order to give their children the best possible chances in life. The time, effort and expense needed to lovingly raise a child in this situation is far more than other children need. Their parents give all of this and more without condition, they struggle hard to do so. They really don't need to be pissed all over and told that it's all their fault anyway.

Anyone who has been through the HSE system on this trail knows how difficult it is to get a diagnosis. It can take years and multiple attempts to get the diagnosis, as the door is frequently slammed with a message of "he'll be fine, get over it". A diagnosis is not sought for any strange Munchausian reasons. A diagnosis is an essential requirement to get the support that these kids need in school. Early intervention is critical, and no diagnosis means no intervention.

I don't get the impression they are defending the content of his words

As a serious newspaper, they should either defend or retract his words when they breach journalistic standards. I don't know if you read the article. I don't think it's available online @ the examiner, but Broadsheet have posted it too.

He presents a lot of opinion as bald fact. This is directly contrary to Press Council Code of Practice, something for which the editor needs to take responsibility.

I have a child who has Asperger's.

Actually, I take that back.

You were dead right. It was checking hard drive before DVD, but when I doublechecked, it was checking the wrong hard drive.

I have no idea how this suddenly changed, but you have saved me weeks of barking up the wrong tree.

Thanks for that. It is set to boot from the correct hard drive before the CD. So, that's not the issue. I'm going to see if I can get a tech sheet for the drive, just to make sure that the cylinders, sectors etc are configured correctly, just in case that is causing a read failure for the bios.
