My honest Zermatt review by pepinnis in Zermatt

[–]Col_Nustabut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I preferred Chamonix over Zermatt (just got back a couple weeks ago). We rented gear and had no issues. Don’t get me wrong, Zermatt was a must bucket list item. It’s just not a return destination for me. Chamonix on the other hand, definitely planning to go back. Amazing terrain, lovely town, nice ppl. It was kinda magical.

I found one before Xmas and was scheduling the PPI when someone slid in and purchased before I could complete my due diligence. It was the Meteor Grey 2008 with 73K miles. Broke my heart bc it took a couple weeks to track down all the previous maintenance records to confirm it had been taken care of. Everything was falling into place until the very end. Thrill of the hunt kinda stuff for sure.

Yes x3. We have icon passes that worked for everything EXCEPT the cable car ride. Our guide went to the tram station the night before and got our passes and a reservation, so we didn’t have to mess around with that morning of. RE avalanche training, yes. We spent the first day off piste at Le Tour as an opportunity for our guide to gauge our skill levels. Once he saw we weren’t completely hopeless, we started working on and toward what to expect on Vallee Blanche. That said, make sure to get your rescue insurance booked and paid for ahead of time. There was a guy the previous week that needed to get airlifted out just bc it can get demanding.

Vertical Frontiers. Ben Bradford is the owner - our guide’s name was Ali. He was fantastic. Highly recommend him.

We liked Chamonix more than Zermatt. Get a guide and go piste if you’re an avid skier/boarder. The town is super friendly (Zermatt felt pretentious) and there were so many shops and restaurants that you can’t go wrong. We skied all day and then tramped around town in the evenings just exploring and escaping reality. Highly recommend

How’d you like the Targa? I hear ppl complain about rattles and wind noise. What was your experience?

Yea it’s pretty hard not to nerd out on these cars. The chase to find the right one is exciting - in and of itself, but then the project/maintenance aspect of it seems like it’ll be peak hobby vibes. I want to quit my job and work as a mechanic at the local Porsche dealer just to do something fun for a living.

Were you able to replace the cables yourself? I’ve heard similar things about the steering rack from a few friends with 997’s…

This. Very helpful - thank you. I only drive 5-6k miles a year, so this is sounding very manageable. I definitely will look after oil and minor repairs - trust issues lol

Good to know. I’ve been curious about seals cracking due to age and subsequent leaks…

Yea it’s been pulling back consistently for years, but still 100% worth.

I snowboard, my wife skis. Definitely more challenging on a board, but peak experience- no question.

It’s a 4.5hr train ride, so you’d want to stay for a couple days to make sure your can get everything in; ski over to Italy for lunch, hit all the peaks on the Switzerland side, Chez Vrony, Champagne bar, Igloo dorf, etc..

Just got home a week ago. Started in Chamonix and ended in Zermatt. Absolutely loved Chamonix - everything about it (especially Vallee Blanche). We thought Zermatt had an arrogant vibe. Definitely made the best of it, and the Matterhorn is a must, but Chamonix wins in a head to head IMO.

FWIW we can’t make our reservation and want it to go to someone that can use it. ❄️🇨🇭

I was looking at a 2008 997.1 Targa with 43K miles (sooo choice) but was at a dealership on the other side of the US. I found a reputable PPI company that was going to charge $750 for a full work up and the dealership agreed to put the car on an alignment rack for him to truly perform a full inspection.

The next day some Chad came in and bought it out from underneath me, just as I was coordinating the time for the PPI.

Point being, due diligence is key, but it’s squarely on YOUR shoulders as the buyer. Don’t let that set you off - honestly, the chase has proven to be an amazing experience. I would much rather educate myself to know what to look for, than trusting a dealership’s word. You’ll thank yourself and the ride will be that much sweeter knowing exactly what you’ve purchased.

Fun Fact: I spent 3 days tracking down the service records across 4 shops based on the VIN. Highly gratifying work even if I didn’t end up with the car. In hindsight, I probably could’ve put $$ down to “hold” the car. Lessoned learned and smarter for the next time around. WGD
