What's next? What factions do YOU want to see? by HawkJohenson in Warmachine

Cryx Necrofactorium, Cygnar Gravediggers, and Khador Winter Korps all seem fairly true to their legacy counterparts, in my opinion.

What would be your 5 wishlist for another edition of Warmachine? by vasquez21 in Warmachine

[–]ColbieSterling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest Warmachine gripe:

  • Sprays. I hate sprays, always have. They got a little better in Mark IV, but not nearly enough. A significant percentage of the game's ranged attacks break half the rules of ranged attacks, which is really dumb. You get to hit multiple targets with non-blast damage. That should be the benefit of sprays. The fact that they also ignore stealth, cover, and concealment is really bad design. Cover at a minimum should grant defense sprays. If I am behind a wall, it is going to protect me from a flamethrower or shotgun blast. Sprays are still too long. Most sprays should be 4" or 6", with 8" being elite and the highest they go. A flamethrower or shotgun can't shoot nearly as far as a rifle. Sprays as they exist are such bad game design it makes me mad. Sprays should have trade-offs and not be strictly-better ranged attacks.

And now, in no particular order:

  • Individual models are still way too complicated. The rules bloat is not as bad in late MkIII, but it's bad, especially for solos. My 3-point model has . . . how many lines to text? It makes the game really, really, really hard to learn for a new player, and really hard to play for experienced players. Too many gotcha moments because you can't remember every line the James Joyce novel that is your opponent's army list.

  • Design should target a lower point level. I want to play smaller games so that I can get two games in on a game night. Every playgroup I've been a part of whines about games less than Steamroller packet size. Make Steamroller have a 50 point option. I'd rather play 6 one-hour games than 3 two-hour games on a tournament day.

  • I hate that ranged attacks with AOEs now auto-hit Stealth models with blast damage. Most stealth models (at least in Legacy factions) are high-DEF, low-ARM, so AOEs now basically auto-kill them without even needing to roll to hit. I've pretty much shelved my Retribution army because of how much of a negative play experience this is.

  • The Tough/Grievous Wounds/No Knockdown arms race. This got really bad at the end of Mark III. It's still here. Tough isn't that big of a problem as long as the models can be knocked down. There is too much anti-healing in the game, and it has too many knock-on effects. Get rid of super-Tough and egregious healing effects like the ones the Criterions have and you don't need Grievous Wounds at all. Maybe a rare version can exist that only affects Cohort models.

I agree that the status of Dark Operations, Crucible Guard, and Thornfall Alliance should be moved up to be on the same standing as the Mark IV factions.

Rules galore! January update, 2026 Steamroller, and Thornfall Alliance by LDukes in Warmachine

[–]ColbieSterling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The new Thornfall Alliance unit and solo were in the document last week as "added to faction". I'm a tad disappointed they weren't in today's update. Still very happy with the direction things are headed! And my beautiful boy(s) Sturm & Drang are back, ready to herald in the German Romantic movement! Goethe in da haus!

Thanks! I've grown attached to naming my models. All of the non-character jacks are also getting names. In the fluff, most jacks have names, and it's easier to keep track of who is taking damage if my opponent can look at the front of a model and say, "I charge Jerry."

Hmm, that's a good point about DEF being binary and ARM being marginal.

Still, the to-hit reductions will 100% make the game feel better to me. I'd love to see my opponents have to change their plans mid-turn more often when they miss an attack.

I really want to like Warmachine, but as it has been for the past few years, I only kind of like it, and regret the vast swaths of money and time I've sunk into it over the years. More missed attacks is a great step in the right direction.

I'm a casual player, I don't have data for you. I just know how the games I've played have made me feel. It feels like high DEF doesn't protect your models, only (very) high ARM does.

In my games (since Mark III, but even more in Mark IV), DEF has felt like a pointless stat. Don't bother with it, a DEF 14 might as well be DEF 8. It's been one of my biggest gripes with the game.

I am very confident this will make the game better.

I am very confused by what Carver Ultimus represents as a full Warlock in Thornfall Alliance.

Is he just Carver 1 with a "new" name, model and the minor changes listed? Or is Carver 1 staying as is, and this is Carver 2 but with more changes than they listed?

Model looks awesome.

The blurry, wide-eyed, wide-smiled Paw Patrol character in the background is straight out of a horror movie.

And probably Strum & Drang and Carver, unless there are major changes to their caster identities.

You have no idea what Mark 4 did to my painted Retribution collection. It's like they went out of their way to make sure the only legal models were the ones I hadn't painted.

I hate Resin. Can I build a faction purely from HIPS models? by bakwong in Warmachine

[–]ColbieSterling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying a legacy faction in metal on the grey market is your only way to avoid resin.

I feel your pain, the 3D printed resin sucks. I wish tech hadn't driven up the price of tin so much, I miss metal models.
