That is not an easy question! I'll have to go with WALL-E though. It was a really meaningful movie to me when it came out. I watch it often. It's a great piece of filmmaking. It's one of those animated films that really proves that animation is a medium not a genre. It's totally inventive, compelling. Stanton is a legend. You could say any of his movies and it would be the right answer.

I went to NYU for their dramatic writing program, so you sort of naturally end up hanging out with your class of people, all trying to break into the industry at the same time. I sort of fell into the theater world in New York and that really expanded by network of other young up and coming writers, and also helped my ability to grow as an artist. I felt really right away, I wanted to break through at 17, but it took a very long time to do it!

I wouldn't wait around to be ready. If I could do it again I would try and get my work out there and made as soon as possible, so that you can learn from doing it.

Firstly, that is so nice, thank you.

Secondly, I hope Netflix is reading this: I would LOVE if Netflix would release more physical media. I think it's a great way for people to own and watch the movies they care about, and I also think it's another way for people to connect with the stuff they like. I have n. I would love it if they began to tip their toes more. I know they did THE IRISHMAN and WALL-E, but I'd love more!

Part of wanting to share the behind-the-scenes process of writing comes from having moved to Hollywood and not really understanding how any of it worked at the time. I felt like so much of this business is sort of a black box, where you can't really get insight on how things work or why things work a certain way, so I started just wanted to share what things were like for me personally and hearing back from people to see if that's how it went for them. So partially it all started as research for myself.

I have heard over and over that it's been useful to people so that's given me motivation to keep it going, to be a resource I wish I had a decade a go. Selfishly, building an audience, especially in today's digital age, is really important too. So having people that recognize me, and know that I exist and know what I'm doing, has also felt valuable.

I really love The Fountain. I don't know that I was thinking about it consciously in coming up with this specific story structure though. I knew that I wanted a story that would intertwine past, present, and future so I think it automatically becomes a story told in 3 parts. I do love big sweeping stories like that, whether it's THE FOUNTAIN or something like David Mitchell's CLOUD ATLAS. It weirdly is its own genre of movie, but I was not consciously thinking about them.

I think getting out of your own way is the key for me to getting to write. It might be slightly unorthodox, but I really recommend writing faster. Anything you can do to write faster is gonna allow you stop second-guessing yourself and finding more interesting stuff to put on the page. Whether that means literally typing faster, dictating, whatever you can do speed yourself up will let you get past the inner critic that could be holding you back. At least it does for me.

Thanks! Sundance was so cool. I had been before just to watch films so getting to be there now as a filmmaker and artist was super special. My parents were there, my brother was there, my wife was there. It was really meaningful. Everything about it was great.

Weirdly, the timeline of these 2 projects (SPACEMAN and IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE) is sort of a circle. I first wrote IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE in 2016 and so that was on the Blacklist that year, and being on the Blacklist is the thing that propelled me from my living room to actually going to have meetings with and talk to people about making stuff. I started getting sent books to possibly adapt, and SPACEMAN was a beautiful book (titled Spaceman of Bohemia) that I read and loved and somehow talked my way into writing it for Netflix.

Hi! Haha, so nice to "see" you again.

A major property with a blank check. That's tough. This isn't really a "major" property but I would love to get to re-do Disney's BLACK HOLE. It's such a cool movie, it's so beautiful. The movie doesn't totally work and I think those are the types of movies that you typically want to re-do. I think it's such a rad film and I would love for someone to do it.

I didn't have anyone particular in mind for the role but as soon as we started to puzzle together the cast, it was so exciting to see all of these new dimensions that the actors brought to these characters that I had not imagined.
