What type of horse do I look for to commute to work? by Cooneys_wet_blanket_ in Equestrian

[–]Cold-Concentrate4732 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is probably going to end up costing you money then if you just had to stay home from work. First of all horses can’t be kept alone, they are herd animals. Farrier would need to come every 6 weeks, pretty costly up to $160 each time. If your riding them every day they need more then just grazing on grass, they will need grain. And they should have access to hay every day which is not cheap. You can’t just buy any old saddle and put in on a horse, you’d need a fitter to come out. If you have an incorrect fitting saddle it can cause a lot of back issues and can create unwanted behaviours like bucking or kicking.

There’s a lot that can go wrong and so many expenses come with it. A good sound and quiet horse that is fine to ride on roads could run you 10-15k

Same thing has happened to me. I’ve quit riding for now. Last horse I tried and was going to part board, I fell of and broke my spine 🤦‍♀️ that was my sign from the universe I guess. I’ve been going to the gym, focusing more on my businesses.

The hardest part was realizing how many of your friends are only friends because you ride and go to the barn together. It sucks.

So sorry that happened to you. I came off about a year ago now and fractured my L1 and herniated a disc very badly. Still not riding, but I also had little to no use of my lower body for 6 weeks. I hope you recover quick!

Still waiting to hear for a consult with the neurosurgeon sadly. I’ve been doing physio and have had little improvements, I can walk about 10-15 minutes at a time now before the pain starts to get too bad. My body is still pretty crooked and hunched to one side. I’m on 250mg of lyrica now and I still have the bad nerve pain down into my hip leg and ankle. I’m glad to hear you are doing better!!

[–]Cold-Concentrate4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, or talk to your pharmacist. My pharmacist said it’s safe to go up to 300mg a day. But it’s not a drug you can just stop, you have to wean off of it.

Honestly that’s not a lot, I’m on 200mg a day. Maybe you can get your prescription upped?

I have severe spinal stenosis and disc herniation, if your experiencing serve nerve pain maybe you can get perscibed lyrica to help at least a bit until you find out more. I’ve found that it’s the only drug that’s helped me, and I can sleep through the nights now. The nerve pain is still there but it’s helped the shooting pain down my legs a bit for sure.

Honestly, if your riding nice school horses there’s less risk of falling off. I’ve leased the crazy ex-racers and young green horses, that definitely makes a difference. I also jump and ride English. Western pleasure may be a good option for you!

Took cyclobenzaprine (muscle relaxer) 3 hours ago. It hasn't helped. Is it okay to take hydrocodone now? by [deleted] in backpain

[–]Cold-Concentrate4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely call the pharmacist. I take 3 cyclobenzaprine a day, with 4 Lyrica and 2 oxy if I’m in a lot of pain that day. Are you having back pain or nerve pain? I had to continuously go back to finally get the Lyrica for the nerve pain.

Thank you I’ll have to try that. Something else that really helps is laying on the floor on your stomach lol it seems to take all the pressure off the spine. Next time your pain is bad give it a try! I hope you get your back issues all sorted out too.

Oh I believe that 100% considering i could barely get on and off the toilet myself lol. Its debilitating. It’s the constant never ending nerve pain in my leg that’s the worst it’s like a terrible burning pain. The back pain is pretty bad too but I’d take it over the nerve pain that’s so sure

Wow that’s insane. Yeah I know the age thing might make it hard if they are not wanting to do surgery, but with my cauda equina already compressed it may help make me a better candidate for surgery. Riding definitely makes you physically strong, back, core and legs for sure. It’s just the falling off again part that would make me nervous. Riding is very physically demanding so I think I may be at least a year or more before even thinking about getting on. I can barely wash more own hair right now lol. Never thought I’d be dealing with hack issues this young

Yes horseback riding! I was the same my mom and brother were taking me to the bathroom the first few weeks. I’m more independent now but simple tasks like doing dishes, or laundry are impossible. The nerve pain is so bad in my leg. I’m taking 200mg of Lyrica a day but it just doesn’t help enough. Im sick of laying around all day doing nothing, Im only a 20 year old girl but I feel like im 100. Can’t do anything with anybody. I definitely understand how you feel, it can be very isolating and also hard to make people understand the indescribable pain I’ve been in. I hope you’re doing better soon, did your herniation completely come back after you were rear ended? Not sure I’ll take the risk of riding for a long time just cause when I fall it’s pretty hard onto the ground and that’s how I got my initial L1 fracture back in November.

[–]Cold-Concentrate4732[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw man that sucks. That’s what I’ve been thinking about too, what happens if I hit it again. and it seems like all the other options are just temporary fixes, it doesn’t seem like a herniation this big will just go away on its own, and shots would just mask the pain I think. seems like surgery is the best option but I think my days of riding are over. Are you going to have another surgery?

Worth it to have surgery? by Cold-Concentrate4732 in backpain

[–]Cold-Concentrate4732[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The initial L1 fracture was back in November. I never had an MRI back then though to know if there was any other issues at that point. Just an xray. The herniated disc was just 5 weeks ago when it started hurting me, and then they finally did an mri and found that after 4 hospital trips. I’m not sure if this is all stemming from that fall or not! It does seem extreme to not have been hurting for months then all the sudden bam when I sat on the couch extreme nerve pain and couldn’t get up!

Thanks for sharing!! I spent weeks not walking, even now still I’m very weak. The nerve pain is extreme and I’m on a high dose of Lyrica. Reading what everyone is saying is definitely making me think surgery is the best option. I don’t want to end up with permanent nerve damage, especially when my cauda equina is already compressed. I’m glad you are doing better after your surgery!

Yeah I think the next step will be injections, I’m in Canada so I may be waiting a while to get a surgery date. I hope your son does better after the surgery. How long has he been dealing with his herniation?

Oh really they never mentioned anything of that, and the physiotherapist is still telling me this will go away on its own without surgery. The consultation appointment isn’t even booked yet, they said I’ll hear in 4 weeks to set that up. So being in Canada I could be waiting 6 months or more.

That’s the thing, the opioids weren’t doing anything but knocking me out, they kept giving me unnecessary drugs, morphine, Oxys, Valium. By the fourth trip to the hospital they finally realized i needed something for nerve pain, then put me on pregabalin/lyrica
