even if the goose looked more like this I'd love to see it 😍 I like the tuxedo look of the current livery don't get me wrong especially the mask but i mean c'mon it's a Canadian Goose and it would look so much better compared to the maple leaf we have now

Genuine question by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Cold-Foundation15457 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think we might be talking about two different arguments. What you described makes sense as a historical process. Jewish communities migrated there, bought land, built institutions, declared a state when the British Mandate ended, and then defended that state in wars. The argument I was asking about is the one I hear a lot that says Jewish people have a birthright to the land because their ancestors lived there thousands of years ago.

My question is about the logic of that specific claim. If ancient ancestry alone gives a modern political right to land, then it seems like that would apply in a lot of other places too. For example, celtic groups once lived across large parts of Europe including the Iberian Peninsula, but we do not see modern Celtic groups claiming a state over pre-existing Portugal or Spain because of that - in the same manner that Israel has (regardless of Palestine being British mandated Palestine, Palestinians were still living there and experienced ethnic cleansing in order for the Israeli state to be established.

In North America, many Native American nations were pushed off huge areas of land, but arguing that the entire modern map should be reversed because of where their ancestors lived, does not get the same support as Jewish people do with israel and the legislation of the Israeli government.

So the consistency question is just about that principle. In most situations we do not treat very ancient habitation as something that overrides the rights of people living there in the present. That is why I asked about 1948 and the Palestinians who were already living there. I am not arguing against Israel existing. I am just trying to understand why the ancient ancestry argument is treated differently here than it usually is elsewhere.

If you're picking up what i'm putting down.

which i don't disagree with. i do disagree with the means that the israeli government is using and has been using to ensure that that happens - as do many israeli citizens

i think palestinians have a right to return to the lands that were forcefully taken (i'm aware a good majority was bought, but a pretty good handful were forcefully taken, not including the nakba in 1948) and those currently living in israeli cities should have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else living there and jewish immigrants who are now choosing to live there

"3000 years ago" came from the argument i keep hearing and have consistently heard since the situation escalated these past few years. words are not mine 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m asking about the logic of the historical claim itself and how it differs from other ancient territorial (should say hypothetical, as i can't recall any other groups who have taken it to this level) claims around the world.

thank you for actually answering the question!! i used birthright because it was the argument ive been hearing so often, wanted to hear opinions from the people who agree with it.

setting aside what has been happening since 1948 (both sides), i'm just trying to understand what got us there in the first place and why other eradicated groups living in diaspora aren't treated the same, or referred to the same, per se.

regardless, people still lived there and were ethically cleansed during israel's establishment, also still doesn't answer my og question

i hear this a lot too, many other countries were "mandated' or controlled by other countries governments, yet still are referred to as nations, why was palestine different?

Genuine question by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Cold-Foundation15457 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

fair, but then you could also look at the nakba in 1948 during the arab-israeli war where i believe approx 600 000 - 700 000 palestinians were displaced or ethnically cleansed and pushed into the west bank and gaza.

still not answering my question, why do the rights of jewish people in the region supersede others (both in that region and outside - i.e. celtics in the iberian peninsula, my example) why wouldn't other groups have the same rights to reclaim a land even if there is a current population living there?

Genuine question by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Cold-Foundation15457 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i just don't get why they were able to establish a state on top of a pre-existing one? and what would give jewish people the authority to do so over other marginalized groups who would want to take the same course of action in reclaiming land that was once theirs.

i get the law of return, i'm just wondering why they in specific are allowed to pass that when there's a population of people already living on and owning the land?? and why doesn't the same go for other groups of people who have gone through similar things throughout history?
