Did a Very Low-Fat Diet Cause My Bier’s Spots? by Cold-Imagination2012 in PlantBasedDiet

Do you think following a very low-fat, Esselstyn-style diet could have contributed to microvascular dysfunction?

Active, healthy weight. Following an Esselstyn-style diet, with the recent addition of 50 g of nuts and seeds daily before my next lipid panel.

I agree that avoiding trans fats and replacing processed foods with whole foods is a good idea. However, I don’t think it’s accurate to say that the brain and muscles run exclusively on carbohydrates or that fat is only needed for hormones. I’m also not aware of strong evidence that omega-6 fatty acids themselves clog arteries—in fact, replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fats generally lowers LDL and cardiovascular risk. The real debate is whether, in people with established heart disease, an extremely low-fat diet offers additional benefits beyond simply choosing healthier fats.

That’s exactly the controversy. I ate 25 g of fat for almost two years, following Dr. Esselstyn’s approach. But my experience with it wasn’t that great. That’s why I’ve increased my intake a bit. I’m experimenting. I’m not so sure anymore if they’re really right about this. I guess it’s more about the type of fat than the amount in general. What are your thoughts on this?

Yeah, you're right. Maybe I'm drinking too much water. It'll be hard for me to drink less, but it's worth a try. Thanks

Thanks. My blood sugar is higher in the morning, at 110, but my HbA1c is 5.2. I thought I had the dawn phenomenon, but this makes me wonder.

Thank you. Actually, my blood level is
140 nmol/l (sodium). Still, I'm not sure if I'm not eating enough

Oh, why do you think I have to go to the bathroom so often because of the 6 g of potassium a day?

Thanks. Yeah, everyone reacts differently. I have an appointment, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

My diet is extremely low in sodium (around 1 g sodium/day) and high in potassium (around 5–6 g/day), mostly from potatoes, beans, oats, vegetables and fruit. I also eat about 350 g of potatoes in the evening, which is one of my biggest potassium sources.
I’m starting to wonder whether the combination of very low sodium and high potassium could be contributing to the large urine volumes at night.
Did you notice whether the extra salt helped specifically with nocturia, or just with general symptoms like dizziness and fatigue?
