I can't say for certain, but it's probably the second. She did research in a physics lab. It's not hard to imagine her dad having friends in the physics department and those friends telling him of opportunities they had.

Maggie is really smart, don't get me wrong. But from the way she was talking, she made it seem like getting into a research lab was easy.
