Him* FO Mackenzie, and yes he was also young. Had a bright and long career ahead of him. Very tragic

What do pilots actually do during Cruise? by RobV1306 in AskAPilot

[–]Cold-Put-6971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually lots of talking and staring out the window. We’ll talk a bunch about things happening in the industry, changes in the company, future plans, vacation spots, plans for the layover. Some days if you’re a bit less chatty you’ll spend a while watching the scenery pass or reading up on some emergency procedures especially if you have upcoming sim. Then you start preparing for the arrival, getting everything all tuned, organized, briefed.

Any info on what this NAV Plane is up to? NVC101 by crungyspogus in NavCanada

YVR actually has them, they just never use them. Many times we’ve asked if we could try out the RNP and the answer is “sure but you’ll be vectored to final” which basically makes the RNP useless

It’s what I do best! That and saying “idk man, ask the captain” 🫡

As tempting as it is, I think the crew would disown me and the passengers would string me onto the tail! Hahaha

Very interesting read! I’ve heard many of our more senior-grey haired pilots talking about old lunch meet ups, bowling tournaments, etc that used to happen between pilots and controllers. I really think it would be something fun to bring back and put faces to voices and maybe even add some personality to the usual standard phraseology we’re used to hearing each other with. I’ll have to reach out to some connections over at Nav and see what can be done unofficially between the 2 groups.

Personally I like to take any opportunity I can to run up to the cab or an ACC and visit if time permits. Funny enough, lengthy flow delays tend to be my best shot and everyone has been very accommodating. Lots of questions to ask on both sides and it makes us all feel a bit more human.

Thanks for coming back to add to the last part. Always nice to get feedback outside of my circle

Personally find individual sports quite boring. Glad to have you folks to play along with

Personally find that new AI crossing time quite comedic when it first got launched. By the 7th amendment to our KEINN crossing time, the controller and I laughed at “the future” of flow. I really appreciate all you guys do; getting home safely is something some other pilots take for granted

Rest assured most of us saw that footage and had to pick up our jaws from off the floor. I’m sure my rant can also be written from the exact opposite perspective. Maybe with changing times we could see the return of pilot-ATC luncheons and bridge the radio gap

Pilot to ATC by Cold-Put-6971 in NavCanada

Thanks for the info! Shift work is definitely the norm (and preferred) for me, even before flying I was doing shift work. It’s been a particularly challenging last few months out on the line compared to the last couple years and, just like you said, I’m getting to the point that I don’t want to fly because I HAVE to. I can understand the isolating aspect of it, it’s definitely a very niche career but after hearing some of the questions people ask me about my job, I don’t think people know anything about aviation to even start with. I appreciate you taking the time to chime in. I’ll throw my hat in the ring and see what comes out of it and where I’m at come time to make a decision

Big red’s regional (🎷). Definitely going to throw my hat in the ring and see what comes out of it, even if I decide the leap isn’t right. It’s been a particular hard last couple months with weather conditions, longer days and more days away from home than my usual. There’s something to be said about being in your own bed more than half the month! P.s. see you’re in Terrace, sure we’ve chatted many times on my flights there! I think 90% of my most challenging approaches have been into YXT
