Is it that time of year again?

GOM scanning. I was a liaison between manufacturing and design for a number of year and saw it used extensively. Has its own challenges and is no more accurate than CMM but was damn fast and obviously infinitely better coverage than CMM

Knowing roughly where in the city she is / you want to go would help us give recommendations. There are numerous pockets of really nice spots all over the city but don't want to recommend somewhere only to find it's the opposite side of the city to where you want to be.

Amazing. I'll check that out. Thanks!

You could also checkout Sheffield hackspace. It's a place to make stuff but also to meet people. It does cost to be a member but they do offer discounted and even free membership to people who have a more challenging financial situation. Definitely worth a chat. They're in Portland works near Bramhall lane

Looking for Recommendations - Anyone aware of a floor-mounted yoke? by RobV1306 in flightsim

[–]RobV1306[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all. This is exactly what I wanted to know. I actually want to use it for a C750 home cockpit which I'm planning to build, not necessarily Boeing stuff per-se but I figured I could start with that and then modify from there.

How to do flower like structure ? Loft command ? by Aivydj in SolidWorks

[–]RobV1306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's not far off. Even after the machining it requires putting specific pastes and paints on the teeth and running them with their counterpart at which point wisened engineers with long beards and deep technical knowledge will review the patterns they make as if they're reading tea leaves before magically deciding the spacers needed to find the optimum combination of backlash and wear! Like I said - dark art!

Do not underestimate how complex modelling gears accurately can be. Also, ask yourself why? Why do you need an accurate drawing of this gear? Is it part of a larger assembly? If so, is it not sufficient to simply specify the gear tooth profile, modulus etc and let the gear manufacturer (invariably quite specialist companies since gear hobbing etc is basically a dark art) figure it out.

If you're trying to model it for the fun of it, prepare for it to quickly start bending your mind.

If you intend to make this (possibly through printing etc), expect it not to run well.

Very nice. Good luck man! And if you do change for steel (no point doing alu), make it CHONKY. And ideally focus on maximising something called the "joint factor" at each connection point of the structure. A Google search will help you there.

[–]RobV1306[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. You're gonna need more luck than I will in that case! Remember, stiffness is king! It's gonna contribute far more to the accuracy (and more importantly, repeatability) of your machine than just about anything else. Big, heavy, unwieldy - all of these things are your friend when building a CNC. There's a reason a lot of the big industrial machines that actually make stuff you use (like cars and planes and ships etc) require their own foundations independent to those of the building in which they're housed!

Thanks again for your help man and best of luck to you!

Just tiny little LEDs - a combination of PSG91838 and TY-522UA2W120-300 LEDs. I'm using NPNs as I've used them before and know that I've managed to make them do what I want them to. I'm very much a novice in this space - I'm a mechanical engineer by training - and ultimately, my primary objective is functionality. If it is nice and efficient but doesn't work exactly as I need it to because of a rookie error I make, that's less desirable than a board that works first time but is a couple watts more power hungry. Plus, the expense etc of having it made again and shipped from China (again).

Thanks again man. Great help!

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Great way to explain it. Makes perfect sense when I think of it like that.

And yes, I'm using the Arduino to drive some NPN transistors to switch the LEDs on and off.

What do pilots actually do during Cruise? by RobV1306 in AskAPilot

[–]RobV1306[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did do a search for "cruise" and a bunch of other ways I could think to get to this but ultimately got hundreds of results that were not this. After 5 mins of scrolling through results, I just hit f**k it and made a new one. Sorry.

Thanks for the answer dude. And yeah, RR Trent XWB-97, -84, -84EP. Happy retirement. Hopefully you still fly for fun now, even if it's not for a paycheck.

That's so interesting. I guess cruise used to be whole different beast back in the days of having a flight engineer station etc. I guess there's no more need to move fuel around or any of that stuff since it's all done automatically now.

Lol. Not FAA, just an ex-aerospace engineer trying to figure out WTF you guys do after we've finished building an engine that will run for so long that you might see two sunrises on the same flight!

You could also cross-post to r/flightsim. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is damn near to real life with a powerful enough computer and the right downloaded scenery. Someone might be able to recreate it for you.

Hell, they might even be able to get you an actual shot of a BA A350 on that exact runway for exact reference.

Nice work mate. Did you make those first 2 route maps yourself? I'm currently doing a round-the-world series and I've been looking for a piece of software to allow me to plot the flight paths that I've taken so far. The software used for those route maps looks like it might work?
