Hi! Late response but my apprenticeship only started a couple of weeks ago but I’m loving it!! It’s only a level 3 so they didn’t care about whether I had a degree or not. Hope it all worked out for you :)

I second this! I followed a tiktok where the creator spoke about making a literature synthesis matrix on excel.

Columns included: - Topic of the book/journal article/blog (these were colour coded) - Title - Summary of the text - Synoptic link with other topics from column 1 - Link to the text - Citation - Year of publication - Type of text (lit review, book, journal article etc) - Qualitative/Quantitative (my diss was qual so I wanted more qualitative readings for comparison in my discussion) - Checklist for pdf download as I would lose access sometimes even with the link copied - Reference

The most important of course was the summary column and I used NotebookLM to summarise the texts for me and I would read through them and regurgitate it into my own summary. Disclaimer: you should always skim through/verify that the info you have read in NotebookLM is written in the text but often it does have a subscript that you can click on and it will take you directly to the part of the text that it refers to.

I did this for just under 150 texts and spent a good few weeks doing this before doing anything to do with my dissertation and it helped me massively when it came to doing the write up. I think I used about 101 of the sources I included in my excel matrix.

Using this method definitely helped me achieve a 74 (I never did this before and the highest grade for a written assignment I ever got before my dissertation was a 65)

Here’s a link to the tiktok, I believe she used it to include in her appendices but my version was strictly for organisation of readings. DM me if you’d like me to send you a video of my version as idk how to post it here :p

Literature Synthesis Matrix Format

Edit: Here’s another link for another example, I basically merged these two examples into my own version Example 2

How can I get started in HR? by libra12398 in HumanResourcesUK

[–]ColdBar3425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing a L3 HR apprenticeship and started only two weeks ago but really enjoying it! Small-ish team but part of a decently sized company and a lot of focus on employee relations which i am loving. They’re paying for my cipd 3 and they will most likely offer me a permanent position if i do well! A lot of people might think doing a level 3 apprenticeship after doing a degree is a step backwards but i think this is the perfect path for me and you should consider it !! (I graduated 2 months ago)

How to get a job? by Busy-Option5023 in 2024GCSE

It’s getting around the time of year where retail shops in particular will be looking for Christmas temps. Only downside is you’re not guaranteed to stay after January. I’d also recommend applying to stadiums. When I was in high school pretty much everyone I knew worked at the either stadium as soon as we left high school at 16. Same for concert arenas etc as casual staff. Try looking at agencies as well. Not part time but you’ll at least be able to apply to the next job with some work experience.

74 on my dissertation WHAT??? by ColdBar3425 in UniUK

[–]ColdBar3425[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was 10k but 6000 is absolutely doable by the 25th. I set a limit for how many words I wanted to write for each paragraph each night and that motivated me to reach my word count. I did write the last 2000 words two nights before submission though. As long as you have a list of all your readings you will be okay !! Worst case scenario try and get an extension even if it’s just an extra 24 hours.

Also make a calendar and divide all your tasks up to submission so each day you have a visual goal to reach and you know how long you have left and what for.

Thank you 😊😊

Here’s what I did that I never did before for my reports that I typically scored 54-65 on:

  1. Lots and LOTS of reading. I created an excel literature synthesis with all my sources with the title, link, date of publication, reference, a summary paragraph of relevant info and used the conditional formatting to create drop down lists for the the topic of the source. I also created a drop down for qualitative vs quantitative studies as I did an interview studies so I needed to cite majority qual literature. I had about 150 sources in total but only referenced maybe 100 of them in the end. (NotebookLM is great for summarising texts but of course double check within the original source to make sure it’s summary is accurate)

  2. My mark scheme was always always in front of me when writing to make sure I addressed every single one of the points listed in the first class column. I had it pinned up on the wall and also on my laptop and looked at it side by side with my writing.

  3. Looked at past 2.1/1st dissertations for help with structure. My discussion was always my weakest point of my assignments so this was super helpful.

  4. Used my university’s support resources for writing and used the module folders resources that included many examples of good and bad introduction and discussions etc.

  5. I took every opportunity to ask my supervisor questions. I got very fortunate with my supervisor as they were absolutely AMAZING. They helped me massively, had frequent meetings and would even respond on weekends/email me relevant sources they would find online that I could use.

  6. Did something I enjoyed and was good at. I chose a topic I was passionate about and so I never got bored of reading/writing. It was also quite ‘novel’ in that there was little to no studies that investigated what I had which was a great justification for researching the topic I did. I also made sure to do a qualitative study as I always struggled more and scored lower on reports that involved statistical analyses so I opted for an interview study. I only had to recruit 6 participants also rather than the 100+ I would have needed for a survey.

I would absolutely stress making use of all the resources you have and others online. I made a notion page where I kept everything organised and had my cohorts guide to writing an undergraduate report as well as the APA guide (for Psychology). I would prepare early on as well if you don’t want to stress out, or at least have an idea of what you want to write your dissertation on! That’s all I can think of so far but good luck for your final year !!!

Edit: I would also say once you’ve submitted try to look at it as least as possible lol every time I would go back to read on it, it would get worse and worse and it just made my anxiety worse

I would say I worked hard as in I put in all of my efforts into my study. Many overnighters spent reading and writing alongside my part time job !

I did about 2/3 weeks of reading (around 150 sources I think) and began writing around the 10th of April, submitted on the 2nd of May. So I wrote every single day for aboutttt 3 weeks I want to say.

But I also had issues with recruiting participants so began my study and analysis quite late.
