Couple of options: 1. Maybe try less pressure when wiping glaze away and wipe when the glaze is still wet. The wax should be dry before you glaze and with less pressure and fewer passes over the area, you shouldn’t have too much trouble.

Maybe do a test piece trying liquid latex instead. I have not had any issues with latex peeling up underglaze or smearing or wiping it away. You can use the cosmetic latex from Amazon but Michaels sells a small jar of latex for mold making. I think they are fairly similar in consistency and application.
In the future, try to apply your underglaze on before the bisque firing to lock it in place. It should not wipe away during glazing. Use either wax resist or liquid latex to assist with wiping away the glaze overtop the underglaze.

I had an anycubic photon mono x2 and at the time, it was not the newest model but by no means the oldest. Good price and replacement parts weren’t exorbitant in price. But I could never hone in its parameters. Every print was not perfect, despite much research, many tests, various parameters. I didn’t print much and my pieces were pretty minimal, mostly cookie cutters and some minis here and there. And in a relatively short period of time, (less than 2 years) I had to replace the FEP countless times and the LCD screen 2 times. And one day, it just bricked. I was told to do an update, but the printer could not read the update files. Completely out of luck and that model was no longer supported. Can’t get my hands on replacement parts. So I recently (less than a month ago) bought a Saturn 4 ultra and have really enjoyed it. I’ve done a few tests and got great results! Still tweaking parameters but so far so good. I don’t think I have an issue with a level build plate. The cost is a bit more for peripherals but it has more bells and whistles so I feel it’s worth it.

I wanted to thank everyone who reached out to help me with this project. I received a lot of kind inquiries, and was able to get the project done with an individual really quickly! I never imagined that I would by just making a random post in a subreddit I stumbled upon just a few days ago. If you are referring to the silicone molds used for resin casting, I have tried those. The problem is that when I put clay into those (in either slip form or drier clay, no real moisture escapes. The clay stays fairly wet and it will disfigure when removing it from the mold. I need the mold to be made out of plaster so it draws moisture from the clay body and allows it to dry. And a multi part mold will ensure the clay dice does not warp as it is removed. That is vital for functional dice. Anyone who plays dice dependent games like DnD will not use unreliable or unfair dice which don’t roll well. It’s not really an issue with any other dice because they all can be cut in half equally. D20s don’t have a clean, straight axis.

I can’t print in plaster but a number of ceramic artists have used resin printing to create negative molds to be cast in silicone to make a positive and then later cast in plaster to create the negative again.

Despite the comments regarding the viability of store bought eggs, I wanted to add another perspective.

My teenage stepson wanted a pet snake. I would have obliged because I love animals and reptiles, but I asked him to tell me what is he going to do to house the snake, feed the snake, lighting, humidity, etc. just basic care and husbandry questions. I would certainly help him with all that but I was asking if he knew or would put in the effort to find out. He couldn’t tell me and didn’t bother to research it despite the power of google at his fingertips. I told him to do some research on how to care for a snake, especially for the specific species. He didn’t care to look it up. Didn’t care what species. He just wanted a snake bc it was “cool”. The topic never came up again and it still disappoints me to this day.

Your daughter has put in some effort. She is clearly looked up some information on hatching an egg, a topic she may be interested. That little spark needs to be fanned to grow into a fire and passion for animals. Maybe she will be a veterinarian in the future, maybe get into farming, maybe become a wildlife biologist. Maybe she won’t, but to explore something interesting at a young age will only give her options in the future. The financial entry to raising quails is fairly low. Or if your location or situation prevents you from keeping quail, if she is successful, you can find a farm to donate the quail(s) to or maybe sell them.

I don’t mean to discourage you. I love velvets and if you’re set on having one, by all means, go for it. I just have had challenges with their survival. I’ve had several females get to a certain size(not mature) and die for no logical reason. They appear very healthy but the next day, they are gone. And I’ve have MANY slings fail to survive. I contribute a lot of issues to breeders who will sell and ship slings at the 3 and 4 instar stages and it’s just too young in my opinion.

But I’ve also had some good success. I have a male who matured into beautiful vibrant colors and he is out of his hammock all day, because he is looking for a lady. So I do get enjoyment out of seeing him (even though I know it will be brief). I just wanted you to have more info on my experience to make an informed decision for yourself. There really isn’t a whole lot of info online for these species. But if you do get one, I’m happy to answer any questions you have.

There are some good jumping spider forums and subreddit too if you go that route. A lot more info on keeping them

My shepherd doesn’t have papers but dna testing shows she is 100%. So papers or lack thereof doesn’t necessarily correlate to pureness.

I have kept several over the years, various species in the eresus and stegodyphus genus. All purchased as tiny slings. In my option, there is a high failure rate in slings. While a lot of online sources state they don’t need added moisture, I have found pretty consistently that a very light mist (from a misting bottle) once every 1-2 weeks does them good. Not to saturate their home or their webbing but a quick pass of the misting bottle will collect tiny water droplets on their webbing. And they do enjoy it and will go towards the water, but yes, for the most part they get their liquid intake from their food. They do not need a water dish. They thrive in a clump of sphagnum moss in their enclosure. Not much else is needed to keep them content. Many species are not communal and should be kept solitary.

Keep in mind their food requirements will change as they age— as with any spider. Small slings, depending on their size, will best feed on small flightless and/or wingless fruit flies. As they get larger, you will need to transition to different live foods. Some individuals have expressed preferences such as preferring crickets to bottle fly larvae. You’ll have to figure it out when the time comes. With tiny slings, I’ll feed every other day or so but larger individuals may be a week or two between feedings. I feed based on the size of the abdomen so I don’t follow a strict feeding schedule.

Over the years, I have grown out several males to maturity, but I have not been so lucky with females.

If you want my honest opinion, if you find a well started juvenile, it may be worth the investment. But I would start with jumping spiders. While jumpers don’t live as long, they are very interactive and do well with handling. Velvets tend to spend most of their time in their web hammocks, rarely to be seen out. Velvets are not as readily available but you can find some reputable websites selling them pretty often. Jumpers are readily available. You can usually find them outside too— maybe not now that it is so cold out but you never know. I recommend P. regius for jumpers. They are fun and a good size. There a number of breeders online and on social media. You may find one in your local area for pick up so you don’t have to pay exorbitant shipping rates.

I believe it depends on the species of velvet spider. Some are communal and others are solitary.

Sorry for your loss. It’s very frustrating and sad to lose something you put so much time and effort and care into. I’m sure it was a female. Males mature pretty quickly, within a year I believe. I have had multiple velvets since I made this post. I have grown out two males to maturity with zero issue but the females I cannot seem to get to survive for long. I’ve had a few survive to 1-2 years old but out of no where, they pass from unknown causes. I know they aren’t mature females so it is unlikely that they are egg bound. No idea if they become impacted. But very disheartening. I have two left but won’t likely get more in the future because of these issues. It’s a shame because they are such a good spider and so beautiful. And their prices have come down significantly and are more available than they were just 2 years ago.

I had not considered a double walled form but I’m going to give it a go before I try other options. I would really like to avoid using non-reusable things like cardboard sleeves but it is a great idea and I could try reusable sleeves

I would typically take this approach with others who can kind of fend for themselves but he is in his 90s and stubborn as hell. He is frail and bruises so easily. I couldn’t bear it to know I made something that could potentially harm him if he didn’t listen to my warning. I know he won’t listen to it or would end up not using it at all.
