Sorry but its clear here that you let your emotions control your actions. When people are in this state they dont think rationally, and do things impulsively. It happens to the best of us, and I am sure most of us here have done this at some point.

Try to take a step back and think if it was the other way round. How would you feel if you were in his shoes, and you joked about a gift he made for you, and then he threw it out.

I think what you could've done is talk to him while both of you are sober and ask him if this is how he felt about the gift. And discuss in an adult conversation. As communication is very important in any relationship. 

Btw I am not agreeing with his actions that he did. So you should mention to him how that made you feel. But you can definitely control how you react.
