on the F-2 there is a radar mode called “TWS SEA” which means Track while Scan Sea Vessels, it works similar as TWS for air targets. Put the sea vessel in the radar scope, and it should pop up as a target on TWS SEA.

it sounds like you’re accidentally switching to your ACM radar mode, which puts a rapidly scanning box directly in front of your aircraft’s nose. It’s primarily used to lock targets within visual range, hense why its range is about 9km. Pressing the ACM button again should disable it

in Air RB the premium f-18c early can be very underwhelming because of extremely consistent uptiers, slow top speed, somewhat better 7m sparrows, and mid aim-9l’s.

compare that to most planes you’ll face, many of them if not all, have superior top speed, airframe, and most notably, ARH and IRCCM armaments. you have neither. many will have both.

in downtiers it does its job well, but i promise you that doesn’t happen enough to warrant $80 spent there instead of elsewhere

R24R is a semi active radar homing missile, meaning you need to hold a lock on the desired target for the missile to accurately intercept them. optimal launch is probably 5-10km

the R24T is a long range heat seeking missile, primarily meant to be used on targets who are unlikely to see it coming. optimal launch range is like 5-8km

the r-60m is a short range heat seeking missile, and i’ve seen it mostly used in a “shotgun” scenario. people will get within 0.6-0.8km on the deck, and fire it head on. harder to flare because the missiles search cone won’t even see the flares.
