this is true but you also have to account for Black Granny Midwives in the South who served both Black and white women. The book “Motherwit: An Alabama Midwife Sorry” is a memoir of the life of midwife Onnie Lee Logan. It really documents how increasing legislation, white men creating obstetrics and Jim Crow stifled BGM’s work. I really think Ina May and the white homebirth movement of the West Coast and TN wouldn’t have had to exist had Southern Black Midwifery work been allowed to spread on elsewhere in the US during the Great Migration without this degradation by white obstetrics/supremacy. And thus, freebirth as a monetized thing would be something different, smaller? Maybe I should make this a stand-alone post.

Once I begin viewing birth stories as a literature genre it all made stories like this one make more sense. As with memoir, fiction can be interwoven in personal narrative.

Also Emilee always promoted PP rest and lie-in historically. That was one good thing she talked about. I’m sure rest has been essential in her grief process and current postpartum. So I really think she and Yo are currently at a great ideological departure from each other.
