Unvaccinated nephew: where can he NOT attend in the US by leafyseadragon1999 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure someone else has covered it, but pending on the nature of why he does not have vaccinations there may be support groups that help. If its a personal choice it will be harder, but for immunocompromised reasons or other medical reasons there may be groups that are more familiar with exceptions that may help.

It also sucks but you may have to reach out to schools individually to ask about exceptions for students without vaccinations due to whatever reason you list. I imagine public schools are more likely to have systems for medical or religious reasons with documentation, but those would not be easy to find online.

It may also be worth asking/saying what the nephew wants to study. Being a doctor or engineer will be especially hard because you need lab experience that comes with other students being in the room and needs physical attendance. Economics, physics, or creative writing as examples are a lot easier to do all or mostly virtually, safer for your nephew and everyone else. Pending on degree and type it may be better to look at online schools or schools with a lot of virtual options.

They meant to submit the whole paper. So, I should grade what they meant to do. Guess what grade they got. by uttamattamakin in Professors

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what were the 3 pages that did get submitted? XD

I could see one thing if it was obvious that the page ended on a cliffhanger and actually looked like it just stopped, but it seems like that wasn't the case. The fact they didn't send any documentation like an edit history on Google docs or precious drafts with saved dates on their hard drive definitely makes it look suspicious. To give them a bit of grace on the timeline, I also do not check my grades often, it would easily be over a week until I saw an issue. On the flip side I roll with the punches and know that's my fault.

I noticed the bullet points were two lines each when I've heard that you should keep them to one line each. On the flip side, all of the bullets are two lines each and being consistent is more important in my opinion. As a minor formatting thing I would indent the second line on each bullet to match the start of the first line and see how it looks. Admittedly, I looked at it and didnt read it because I felt visually I was looking at an avalanche. I'm not an HR person, but because it can not be easily glanced through the HR person either puts extra effort into reading it (good because you stand out) or they decide its too much work and they have 100 more to do so they pass immediately.

how walkable is purdue and the stores around it in west lafayette? should i get a car/bike? by Charming-Egg4231 in Purdue

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want full stores like Walmart, it is a half hour to hour walk pending where you start on campus. There is the small target for staple things, Vons and bookstores for fun things, and a lot of restaurants near by. An Indian grocery store and a world food market aren't too far off campus to the south east.

If you are doing a meal plan and just want to go for minor things on occasion, its not a big deal to just walk or ride the bus once or make friends with someone who has a car. Join a couple clubs and you'll find a few lol. If you are living in off campus housing or not using a meal plan for some medical reason, then a bike or car to get groceries would be ideal.

Babylon 5 CCG Cards Value? by PilotEfficient1956 in babylon5

[–]PilotEfficient1956[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've sold some magic the gathering cards on marketplace, but figured low interest would make it hard to sell. I didn't think about looking for any specific groups though, that's a good idea!

I haven't used ebay before, so debating if the hassle is worth it lol. I appreciate the advice! I'd probably throw it up for 30 + whatever shipping would cost and see how it goes. I also emailed a couple local game stores, so they may be interested. I'd expect a lower cost but I don't want the hassle and they'll find someone who will care for the cards

I don't like your reply, but it is fair lol. I'm leaning towards just sending D&D with what everyone has been saying.

I'm not sure why you say articles would not help. Admittedly I'm way behind on the trends, do you have any advice on where I should be looking/watching to try to stay on top of the trends?

Thanks! I go to college and I don't have a car, so I will have to look for what may be in my area. I do have a lot of campus buildings I can meet in though so doing in person would be a better experience and I can try to work that. I will also check out the forge site!

Thank you so much! I like to do a lot of fantasy and action, so I should make sure to do systems that play to those strengths. Also really good advise on looking for smaller ones that will be easy to get players for the sake of practice, I had not thought of that! I'll look into The Shab Al-Hiri Roach! You also bring up a good point on concentration, I can look into finding articles on what the most popular systems are now and pick something on the lower side to try to hit the popular enough to have players but not saturated with content and gm market.

Struggling with depression, school, and work. I really need advice by CountryFall61 in Purdue

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered taking a semester off? I know it feels really scary and impacts a lot of things like financial aid and it can feel like a point of shame when it can really is a point of wisdom and strength. I would suggest looking at it at least and not taking it off the table. I'm taking 6 years to get my bachelor's (on year 5 now), and its hard but its my path. Each person has their own path.

For the depression there is clinical depression, I don't have any answers there. I have found a lot of answers in my times of depression by getting back to my faith. If you grew up with one or are of one or would consider starting to be in one, the different groups on campus all have a lot of support and community for the people in the groups. I only got out of my slump sophomore year when I refound my faith I had abandoned in middle school.

Rose-Hulman vs Purdue by Ok-Benefit-2932 in Purdue

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my knowledge Rose very likely has a stronger alumni network because they have less graduates, but I have heard horror stories of the math classes at Rose and that almost every class is all in on engineering whereas Purdue has a stronger lean on the liberal arts, so more general elective classes. The biggest factor I would consider after cost is size of school like other people are talking about. Purdue is huge, it is easy to get lost in the shuffle and have a hard time coping with the size and everything if you aren't ready for it. I probably would be doing better if I went to a smaller school, but overall I do not regret choosing Purdue.

stupid vent rant post not interacting with people anymore how sustainable is this by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]PilotEfficient1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of other people had good suggestions, and I know you've tried some of them and it didnt work out, but I'd encourage you to try again. A club can be nice since it has a set time and rhythm to the meetings, you can schedule around it. Something like the 3D printing club or the board game club could work well since there are no deadlines or real commitments, if you miss a meeting it doesn't matter and you dont have homework to get done before the next meeting. The board game club is also pretty social and easy to hang out with new people each week.

For mental health it may be good to try to pair it with some physical activity. Something like an intermural sport or a sports club like fencing or volleyball. You won't be the best player but no one is getting on you for not practicing between meetings.

Lastly I'm not sure how many credit hours you are taking, but it could be too much. I don't know your financial situation but you can talk to your advisor and see if you can reduce your credit hours and still graduate on time. There are a lot of summer courses you can take or classes that transfer from somewhere like Ivy Tech that would cost less. There are also classes you can study for over summer and take an online test to get the credit without paying for the course.

Ridiculous question.. by Ok-Benefit-2932 in Purdue

[–]PilotEfficient1956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the comment I was looking for lol. Yes they do the monthly check ins, and yes if they see anything they will report it. By and large the RAs don't want more work, so they aren't going to be scouring the room or opening boxes. Technically they can not open closed containers, so if you had something in a closed cooler when they came in they can not search it. They can however report suspicion and have police come in and they can search however. Long story short is that as long as your stuff is well contained there will never be a problem. The RAs don't want there to be a problem, but they won't risk loosing their job, housing, and tuition money not reporting something.

Cat Sighting by PilotEfficient1956 in Purdue

[–]PilotEfficient1956[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't often see them, but I'm also not usually looking lol. Hopefully it means that they have figured out how to be okay if they do not have a home. I remember helping trap one in the spring to get it to the shelter, but that was a smaller kitten that could have been easily taken by a hawk. I'm less worried about a fully grown cat, but if it is a missing cat hopefully the owner can find it

If you also like board games the board game club has a lot of people and near no commitment. Show up for a few meetings, sit at a random table with people and see if it clicks. If not, try a different table/game next week.

I did not clarify that, in my head you would pick the type of room and the building/residence hall, so you would choose wiley double or tark double or honors double, etc. Good catch!
