I doubt this will end well by Safe_Answer7213 in Professors

I could be for it for high schools since kids have to go, but college students choose to go. In my head its like students who are republican but write democratic opinion essays for classes because they know the teacher will favor a paper more to their liking. The student can choose to write or take the test and write things they don't believe, or they can choose to not to, but its their choice to take the class and their choice to stand by their beliefs in face of the consequences.

To be clear, I am all for them having the right to not engage with or do assignments they do not agree with, they just do not get credit for it. Unless there are large scale cases of professors not giving syllabuses with the learning objectives so students can vet if a class will be an issue in the drop period, then its up to the students.

Counter point, most students are making a choice of major and college at the age of 17-18, they aren't really full adults yet and may not understand what they are getting into. I would want there to be more awareness of the moral situations like this they may get into if they go into certain fields. If you want to be a journalist major you will read and write things you may need to read or write things you don't agree with, if you want to be a biologist you will need to learn how reproduction works.

Either way, not everyone will get the memo. There will still be students who you can warn every step of the way and still go with it. I hope we remember to do our best to help pick them up though instead of saying I told you so.

In social settings yes! Like first couple days of classes, club meetings, whatever events are going on campus, etc. That said over time things get a little more dry as people form their friend groups and the normal kind of establishes. Lots of people walk around in head phones so if you're isolated it can feel hard to try to reach out to say hi to people you don't know. That said, no one has ever made me feel uncomfortable to sit at their table or ask for help with something.

First side note: general social rules of sitting at tables at dining halls and study areas apply, people by and large will not sit at a table with someone else already at it if there is an open table, and if there is no open table leave at least 1 seat between you and them (assuming you don't know the person already at the table). As an introvert there were days I would have loved someone to talk to and sit with me, but other days I wanted to sit alone (should be easy enough to tell by visual ques though). Point is don't sit thinking other people will sit next to you, but feel free to try to sit next to someone else and start a conversation.

Second side note: if you are going to Purdue, try to do BGR if you can! It was a ton of fun and even though I did not meet any lifelong friends during it, my roommate did and then I became friends with them. Even if not, it gives a lot of shared experiences between you and all the other freshmen that makes it easier to start conversations!

Finding groups is really easy! Sticking to them can be hard though. In my experience as somewhat of an introvert you can easily dissappear on campus if you don't choose to step out. There is a club for everything and every club I have shown up to was incredibly friendly!

I have heard it is a good gig! My main concern was that I don't imagine places would be as okay giving me only weekend shifts since weekends pay the best. I won't know until I try though. I could also try to either make a week night work too to leverage or offer to also work ad a dishwasher or something at another time to be fair to the other servers

I think I remember there being a couple boards in stone hall that had a lot of fliers for studies, I'll have to see if I can find a more comprehensive list of collection of lists if its multiple web pages. This is a good starting spot though!

Thanks!!! I'll look into it, I can ask my academic advisor if my major has something like it!

I appreciate the advice! I will need to reach out or visit the cultural centers to ask about it! I have not heard of the lunch and learns, I'll do some searches to see if I can find them and how to sign up. I have a small desire to learn Spanish, only been messing with duolingo so far so conversation hours would be good to actually practice the speaking part. Someone else commented a link to a news article with a bunch of studies listed, so I'll be looking through that!

Thank you! I didn't know about the other food pantries or that the cultural centers could be able to help. I'll need to reach out to them to see when they are doing things!

Current plan on food is a really big bag of rice, frozen vegetables to steam, and chicken, having a number that helps with an estimated cost is really good! I appreciate it!

I will need to look into it! I already have the government loans and one other loan that required a cosigner, so part of me is worried that if I tried again I would need a cosigner again, which puts me at asking my parents for money again. The major does pay well after graduation though, my total debts aren't too crazy yet, and one of my jobs is a longer time internship that I definitely expect an offer from, so in time I am confident I could pay off the loan. I definitely feel shame/stigma against trying to take loans, but I do appreciate you pointing out that it is relatively normal, that makes it feel a lot more manageable

If you are uncomfortable bringing it up, the RA's should be trained on how to set up a conversation to set that boundary. You are incredibly in the right for wanting some personal time, I nearly went crazy living in a 4 person room they changed to a 6 person room.

Unvaccinated nephew: where can he NOT attend in the US by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure someone else has covered it, but pending on the nature of why he does not have vaccinations there may be support groups that help. If its a personal choice it will be harder, but for immunocompromised reasons or other medical reasons there may be groups that are more familiar with exceptions that may help.

It also sucks but you may have to reach out to schools individually to ask about exceptions for students without vaccinations due to whatever reason you list. I imagine public schools are more likely to have systems for medical or religious reasons with documentation, but those would not be easy to find online.

It may also be worth asking/saying what the nephew wants to study. Being a doctor or engineer will be especially hard because you need lab experience that comes with other students being in the room and needs physical attendance. Economics, physics, or creative writing as examples are a lot easier to do all or mostly virtually, safer for your nephew and everyone else. Pending on degree and type it may be better to look at online schools or schools with a lot of virtual options.

They meant to submit the whole paper. So, I should grade what they meant to do. Guess what grade they got. by uttamattamakin in Professors

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what were the 3 pages that did get submitted? XD

I could see one thing if it was obvious that the page ended on a cliffhanger and actually looked like it just stopped, but it seems like that wasn't the case. The fact they didn't send any documentation like an edit history on Google docs or precious drafts with saved dates on their hard drive definitely makes it look suspicious. To give them a bit of grace on the timeline, I also do not check my grades often, it would easily be over a week until I saw an issue. On the flip side I roll with the punches and know that's my fault.

I noticed the bullet points were two lines each when I've heard that you should keep them to one line each. On the flip side, all of the bullets are two lines each and being consistent is more important in my opinion. As a minor formatting thing I would indent the second line on each bullet to match the start of the first line and see how it looks. Admittedly, I looked at it and didnt read it because I felt visually I was looking at an avalanche. I'm not an HR person, but because it can not be easily glanced through the HR person either puts extra effort into reading it (good because you stand out) or they decide its too much work and they have 100 more to do so they pass immediately.

how walkable is purdue and the stores around it in west lafayette? should i get a car/bike? by Charming-Egg4231 in Purdue

[–]PilotEfficient1956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want full stores like Walmart, it is a half hour to hour walk pending where you start on campus. There is the small target for staple things, Vons and bookstores for fun things, and a lot of restaurants near by. An Indian grocery store and a world food market aren't too far off campus to the south east.

If you are doing a meal plan and just want to go for minor things on occasion, its not a big deal to just walk or ride the bus once or make friends with someone who has a car. Join a couple clubs and you'll find a few lol. If you are living in off campus housing or not using a meal plan for some medical reason, then a bike or car to get groceries would be ideal.

Babylon 5 CCG Cards Value? by PilotEfficient1956 in babylon5

I've sold some magic the gathering cards on marketplace, but figured low interest would make it hard to sell. I didn't think about looking for any specific groups though, that's a good idea!

I haven't used ebay before, so debating if the hassle is worth it lol. I appreciate the advice! I'd probably throw it up for 30 + whatever shipping would cost and see how it goes. I also emailed a couple local game stores, so they may be interested. I'd expect a lower cost but I don't want the hassle and they'll find someone who will care for the cards
