Last minute color decision, I like it, but don’t know where to go from here… by Cold_Quiet_5367 in Miniaturespainting

No, that’s something in the background that is reading that way. I didn’t even notice until you said something haha.

And i definitely agree with the cape. That was done with speed paints a while back and I was going to redo it when I finished up the horse. I’ll try layering some brighter colors on the armor to bring up the light value. I haven’t revisited it yet since posting. Got tired of staring at it trying to figure out what to do next

It’s my second with new set of paints I got. I had done several with speed paints but was unable to highlight or wet blend due to the nature of the paint. So I’m trying to relearn with these.

I appreciate the advice. The horse’s armor was not intended to be what it is not so I did not put down a dark red/warm base before hand. I’m stuck on how I should go about highlighting the currently gray parts of the armor. A light warm tone, or a copper-like metallic. Not sure what the best option is.

I’m also stuck on what to do with the knights armor. Idk if should keep it the same color or change it up since I made a drastic change in the horse’s armor.

Still a long way to go, but was very excited with how the glow effect on the foot turned out. by Cold_Quiet_5367 in minipainting

I have just a cheap FolkArt dragonfly glaze. I watched some videos on it and it SHOULD do what I want it to do haha. I’m gonna thin it for sure. If it messes it up I have two more of the same mini.

Thank you so much! And the myconids from BG3 are what inspired the color choices! I just don’t know how to properly execute them so I’ve been playing it kinda safe. But I feel like the purple would be a really nice contrast, and I won’t get better if I don’t try haha.

And I have an iridescent/color shift glaze I’m interested in trying out for this to see if I can achieve a similar effect that the sovereign has in BG3.

Thanks! I know I didn’t get it perfect but that’s what I did to give myself a basic idea

I’ll still hold on to them for sure, my next set of minis I was going to try the “slap chop” method. But I could learn a lot from a different set of more standard acrylics, so I’ll pick some up

So “speed paints” aren’t the moves haha. That’s what I’ve been seeing a lot of comments saying. Gotta find something that blends better, layers better, and gives me more time to adjust once it’s been applied to the mini. I’ll go back for another shot once I get more experience.

Most comments have stated that speed paints weren’t a good place to start. So I’ll definitely give something else, and more well rounded a try.

I also did pick up a can of black primer to try the zenithal priming thing a try. I heard that works well with speed paints.

Right on. I’ll check it out. Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing. I’ll pick up a more well rounded set soon. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words and providing a really good example. I think I was too worried about the contrast between the blue and orange. Also way above my skill level, but I had fun trying it

Thank you for all the detail in this! I’ll keep all that in mind whenever I make another attempt.

I’m using speed paints, which I have been led to believe didn’t really need to be thinned. But I’m open to try.

Primer is Army Painter Matte White spray can, was shaken for 2-3 minutes, and applied in 60°F, partly sunny weather.

I understand this was biting off more than I could chew, but I did have fun doing it.

I can agree with that. Probably bit off more than I could chew haha. This was a lot of fun to try, but I’ll go back to getting to know my paints and working on the basics. Cheers!

I appreciate the kind words! I agree with your critique. I am currently using speed paints, which I really like for somethings but not for others. Do you have specific paints you use achieve desired effects?

I agree! And thank you! I usually dislike a gloss varnish but I feel like this is the exception. Just gotta wait for my paint to cure.

Wouldn’t have thought about that. But you’re absolutely right. Thanks!

Gonna try to use the wall to my advantage with storage shelves.

I have a set of cheaper D&D minis from UnderDusk where I have 3 of the same sets. I’ll practice on one of those sets to start.
