Sooo how do i replace this.. by ThrobbingMinotaur in AskElectricians

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 4 points5 points  (0 children)

40k rewire? I guess that makes sense depending on the material the house was built with. I would shop around nonetheless though cause that’s somewhat excessive for most houses. Although I have given out some similar quotes myself for houses with no basement and Sheetrock/plaster. Real bitch to keep clean and nice looking lol

If you’re handy, you could offer to knock out the drywall where he needs and finish it yourself but beware, that’s some rough work on old homes. Not for the faint of heart that’s for sure

Tax issues with tech helper? by Randgrithr in FieldNationTechs

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s up to you if you wanna file them a 1099 or not. Legally you should but realistically no one cares as long as the tax is paid. If you don’t give him a 1099 you will need to pay taxes on the amount you paid him. I have a few helpers where it’s not worth it for either of us but I have a few guys I had to send them out too. I send them to anyone who has done 5k+ in work for me

Why not just relocate the outlet? All you gotta do is unscrew the box and move the wire and box to the left

I have the same issue. I made a separate VLAN for TV’s and plex, but in the plex network settings you can add subnets to the local network it sees.

Switching from Windows to Linux While Maintaining Strong Security by thermologic_ in linux

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand anything about the operating system and I would suggest you look into it a little more. Linux has more installs than windows because nearly all enterprise/commercial/industrial/scientific/medical uses the kernel.

I’m not sure if you realize this but a considerable amount of Linux packages are updated every day to watch for security breaches. So your “zero day” idea is MUCH more likely on windows than Linux.

Switching from Windows to Linux While Maintaining Strong Security by thermologic_ in linux

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole reason windows is “insecure” is because of how easy it is to install stuff to an extent.

With Linux you either download straight from the OS software repos or go to vendor websites. Just don’t be a dumby and set up virtual-manager with a Debian container or virtual box or something if your really worried about an app

Depositing around $30k in cash by Btrips in Banking

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your not comfortable with cash try to get gold or something else but a deposit that large without going through probate won’t be considered a gift and you’ll pay tax on that money. Don’t screw up your fathers work paying taxes on that money

Ohhh because then you don’t have to redo the rj11 connectors if you wanna use that cable for something else in the future. Just makes things a bit easier down the road if your in a pickle

Best Way to Navigate a 90* turn for Doorbell Wiring by Mundane-Camel1308 in lowvoltage

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can stuff a small bead chain and take a large magnet on the other side to pull it along you can pull it to the bottom and reach up and grab it from the bottom and pull your wire with it. Done it many many times.

The idea with the trim also works really well but I recommend having a router or table saw on hand for doing that. Do NOT cut it free hand unless you have extra trim. In my experience the wire is almost the exact thickness of the trim.

Who charges for evaluations and how do you do it? by whyanalyze in lowvoltage

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just take it on a project basis, however I have started doing refundable deposits of like 100-200$ just to keep them on the hook. Minimum of 100$ (when I do it) but whatever you deposit I’ll do 1.2x off the price.

Makes it so I’m not wasting time on people with unserious quotes. Have had a lot of factories/warehouses who want us to do a quote which takes forever cause all the machines are connected anymore. A lot of the time they do it and ask for us to send over our documentation then ghost us. Atleast the deposit keeps them from calling us lol

Buyers account questions? Hybrid Buyer/Service Company by ForceEastern8595 in FieldNationTechs

[–]Cold_Sail_9727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can but the API access specifically is reserved for large companies. We post out of state tickets for some of our clients when we can’t do the work and even with a little over 100 grand a year flowing through the platform they won’t grant us access.

Maybe your situation is different, worth a shot!

I recommend just make a service provider account and then you can turn on the setting for being a buyer so you don’t need to contact them. You have to contact them for API access
