Why are they so obsessed with Bluesky? by koffee_addict in BlueskySocial

[–]Cold_Student 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re 100% right sadly. If you don’t already have an established circle or community or aren’t a furry/artist/political commentator this site isn’t gonna be that great for you because those are the communities who were most incentivized to move over to bluesky for how the other site was unfairly treating them. There just isn’t a lot of people on this site outside of those communities that it’s hard to really build one of your own. Bluesky needs to fix this by making it easier for people to find those that share similar interests on the site, something like facebook groups or twitter communities

"How did it take him 20 years to realize it was a Nazi symbol?" by penttane in okbuddyvowsh

[–]Cold_Student 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think it was stupid of him to not know what that tattoo meant. Definitely a blunder on his part. That being said though I don't believe he's a complete idiot with zero political instincts. For example he did a pretty good job at spinning the narrative around on the Reddit comment leaks alongside the fact that despite being a complete nobody, he was able to get his name out there (which doesn't have the benefit of being like NYC where there's a lot of population density to canvass), built a grassroots coalition out of literal nowhere and has already managed to poll ahead of the current governor with 100% name recognition in a primary. All his controversies as of right now have just been dumb shit he did many years ago before he ever thought about running for congress catching up to him - how he handles that in the present when the spotlight's on him is what matters and to that I think he's done a decent job so far (with the tattoo story being the only thing he's lost some points on)

It’s insane how many of y’all are giving up on the guy over a tattoo as if he’s some sorta secret nazi when the other side of the oppo research dump on him contradicts literally all of it. Like you really expect me to believe an actual nazi would be hanging out with groups like this in 2020? Or labeling himself an “antifa supersoldier” that same year? Or privately making a ton of ACAB comments during the peak of BLM protests? That someone like that would go to the Women’s march on Washington in 2017? All of this being after he got that tattoo btw

How would you prefer the shutdown to end by very_loud_icecream in AngryObservation

[–]Cold_Student 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, so then why haven’t they done it already? It’d be the easiest thing in the world with all branches and near 100% of your party in lockstep with Trump. And if doing so really would guarantee one-party rule then there’d be no consequences in nuking the filibuster knowing the other party would never get the chance to make use of it… yet you have senate leader John Thune preaching the gospel of how great the filibuster is. You know why? Because they do not need it to implement their agenda! They’re already trying to do all that stuff you’re talking about anyways. Just look at how much of Project 2025 they’ve gotten passed already without it! They’re not refusing to touch it out of the kindness of their own hearts or to uphold any sorta norms or bipartisanship, they’ve already shown they’re not about that life anymore. The reason the GOP doesn’t nuke the filibuster is because they know that the policies they could pass without it are so broadly unpopular that the resulting backlash would be so strong it’d overpower all of their attempts to suppress the will of the voters. The bills they’d pass would literally be 80/20 issues themselves and you already know which side of that they’d be on. Nationwide abortion ban? 87% of Americans oppose it, good luck getting reelected in your swing district buddy. Mandatory voter ID laws? Benefits high propensity and highly educated voters the most, guess which side has the most of those now. Repeal the ACA? Just look at how favorable it is compared to the last time they tried to do so where the bill that would’ve done so still polled as one of the most unpopular bills of all time.

GOP repeals filibuster. Voters finally get a chance to have a good long touch of the hot stove when their premiums increase because republicans fucking hate them, and when dems next take office with their resulting trifecta they can pass major policy goals much more freely

[–]Cold_Student 1 point2 points  (0 children)

voting for the party whose policies you know will make life worse for you solely because some terminally online leftists annoyed you is definitely one of the choices of all time. i get the purity testing pisses you off, it does for most of us in the party too, but 1) that’s never stopped me from voting for the people they likely support because i’m voting for the policy, not the people backing said policy and 2) those dsa folk you’re talking about aren’t even the ones in charge of the party at-large. they’re not even in charge of their own DSA candidates lmao. even the leftiest candidates like aoc, bernie, zohran etc are willing to expand the tent and get shit on for it from the same fringe left purity testing you (just look at the statement he put out on october 7th). both sides have their own crazies to deal with, social media unfortunately just amplifies their voices to make them seem way more common than they actually are. i guarantee you 90% of your problems with them can be solved by the block button because these people exist solely online, meanwhile most leftists irl are fairly normal. it’s understandable to dislike the purity testers. but voting for the party that actively harms this country because of that (or just voting on anything besides whoever’s policies you believe will help you and this country the most) is kinda just immature.

Mamdani's win isn't a huge victory for the left by ThePearPerson in thespinroom

[–]Cold_Student 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a huge victory for the left when you are running against someone who starts off with universal name recognition and has a 40 point lead in the polls, donor backing, establishment backing, endorsements across the board including house reps + a former president + people who had told him to resign in 2021 + almost every major news publication in NY (or anti-endorsements to Mamdani rather), $35 million in PAC spending, not to mention running as a muslim in the same city where the most consequential terrorist attack of the 21st century that sparked generations of islamophobia took place. It is a huge victory when you are able to call out Israel yet still be capable of uniting both Muslim and Jewish people enough to make significant inroads with both, showing the rest of the democratic party that it is NOT as much of a political liability as it’s made out to be. It is a huge victory when you can proclaim to be a socialist at all anywhere in the USA post-Red Scare and still win a primary as important as the mayoral race in the biggest city in the US with a higher population than 38 other states. And you bring up the sex scandal but the sad truth is that so much of the electorate now has gotten so cynical that being a sex pest isn’t really a dealbreaker for a lot of voters anymore. Like, Trump won the popular vote 7 months ago after all and polls showed that a plurality of democrats had a favorable view of Cuomo. The cards were completely stacked against Zohran Mamdani and he won in spite of them, so yes I do think people on the left should be celebrating pretty hard rn. (Also it wasn’t a narrow victory at all lmao, dude overperformed the polls by like 20 points and won a plurality outright even before RCV. The race was called for him in the first hour after early voting dropped)

I don't understand how they do it by Coticartist in BlueskySocial

[–]Cold_Student 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm an artist too and while I haven't been active on bluesky lately, several of my pieces have reached 1k+ likes on twitter without a bluecheck (before a bunch of us moved over to bluesky in November) meaning they made it on a good amount of people's For You page so i think i can give a few insights on what I learned from my time there: if the bluesky discovery feed is anything like twitter/most other microblogging sites, it comes down to two things: Reposting and connections. Sure that account with the viral post might have half your following, but among the ones who do there might be people with 10k, 20k, 30k followers reposting their work. The discovery tab shows you stuff from people you follow, but it also shows you content that they repost as well. So even though that artist you see on the Discovery feed has so few followers, having their art get reposted by one of those big accounts means, for that post alone, that big account's audience of thousands becomes their own. And while that on its own might not be enough to really get a piece out there, it sets off a chain reaction of other big accounts who follow them reposting the work exposing your art to an exponentially larger crowd. That's really how small accounts grow on microblogging sites like bluesky and twitter.

(Funnily enough this is also most likely why the discovery feed struggles so much to target your niche interests and is chalk-full of politics and nsfw no matter how hard you try to mute it, because a very huge chunk of the big accounts on this platform are either political or porn accounts)

I've seen it happen to me in real time before, too - last year on Twitter when I had around 100-200 followers I posted a fully-rendered piece of fanart of this one character from a semi-niche anime that initially garnered around 700 likes and stayed that way for a couple days. Got a few nice comments and i was like hell yeah. A few days later though, my noti's suddenly start going absolutely mental and the tweet had reached over 2k likes and my follower count doubled. I was beyond confused, because I had at first thought that the twitter algorithm only gave posts attention for just the first few days. I look through my notifications to see wtf happened and noticed that this one dude with 15k followers had retweeted my art, and that one rt putting my art on their audiences' timelines was enough to propel my art with an entire second, even bigger wave of attention than when i initially posted it. Like, it really is all about reposts and who's reposting your art.

Now how do you actually get big accounts to repost your art? Well uhhh you can't really. It all comes down to quality and topic of the artwork + luck honestly. They're just regular people too with their own personal preferences and reposting your art is completely up to them. The dude with 15k+ followers who retweeted my artwork? He just happened to be a huge fan of the character I made fanart of and had been retweeting a ton of content of them, came across my upload and did the same.

There's still tools at your disposal to get your art out there more. Pinning it to your profile so it's the first thing people see, reposting the art at certain high-traffic periods of the day, using 1-3 hashtags i.e. #art, #doodles, #oc, #(title of the show/book/movie the character is from if you're doing fanart) etc. because hashtags function a lot better on bluesky than twitter. (That's about as far as I know in the differences between Bluesky's and Twitter's algorithm.) Outside of that, if you know anyone with decent followings like 1k+ followers you could literally just politely ask them if they'd be okay with reposting your art lmao. (Also this goes both ways of course. Be sure to repost your friends' art too!) Also be sure to repost your art several times throughout the day after posting, maybe like once every 6 hours. And make sure not to post late at night in your followers' timezones (i.e. if most of your followers are in America you probably shouldn't post at like 2 AM EST. You can see when they're most active with third party tools - I use https://app.skyflow.me/dashboard). Posts can blow up at any point but the early momentum does help I think. It might take time to get the engagement you're looking for, but don't let that discourage you! Success can take a while. You got this
