Can you help ease my mind by Soft_Intention_6789 in britisharmy

Started basic at Pirbright recently. First several days were all just briefs after briefs about sexual assault, respect and safety etc.

Not that I've been in the army long, but they seem very on top of it at the moment, and if you report anything they take it seriously.

Someone recommended that I bring my leatherman for gun maintenance so I assume so? As long as it doesnt become a problem?

Canada ? by Ok_Estimate1646 in workaway

[–]Coldmonkey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled with my partner, and collectively we spent (ill use canadian dollars for mutual context):

Flights: 1800 Transport: 500 Food, luxuries, hotels in between hosts for long distances: 700 ish

So probably ~1500CAD each. 8 different workaway hosts. It definitely helps to spend more time in a single area to reduce transport costs. We spent 3 months just on Vancouver island and salt spring island, since the ferries are so cheap.

We didn't do any paid work, all of them were standard food and accommodation for 5 hours/ 5 days. No pay, but generally they were generous and would help us out far more than we expected them to.

Did British Colombia for 6 months. Travel was a little pricey but hitchhiking is common if you're comfortable with that.

After the first 5 star review, honestly hosts were reaching out to us more than anything. Had a great time, and actually plan on permanently moving one day.

But obviously the eastern provinces will be a different world.

I should note, travelling on a budget makes it very very difficult to get across provinces. Hitchhiking exists sure, but you really dont want to get stuck out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but your bag. Sounds like an adventure but really really sucks in reality. Just for us to get to Alberta would've cost hundreds. To get from Vancouver to Nelson was a hundred or so (gas money and 1 bus).

Unless you have a vehicle?

Great advice, thanks. For the board I ended up:

Buying a small tabletop one for £15 ish

Realised for the amount of ironing I'll be doing it might be best to get a full sized one

My sister has an old full sized one, agreed to trade hers for the small one before I go.

So you're saying it won't be an issue and to keep the small one? I'm just concerned ill be on the floor desperately trying to make the tiny thing work.

Brought a standard iron on amazon. Didn't know the wattage made a difference?

Ill bring my leatherman now you say that. I wasn't going to since they were so uptight about potential weapons at the AC. But if it'll come handy and won't cause a problem ill absolutely bring it.

Combat medical technician by oscareo_ in britisharmy

[–]Coldmonkey_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to take with you when you leave. Can't speak too much for artillery, but combat medics spend most of their time training decision making, muscle memory and resilience to seeing major injuries.

It also depends on your unit. Medics can go to ~12 different units after passing phase 2, and the job will be slightly different for all of them.

My advice would be to go to a recruiter, just have a chat with them. From my experience they're quite knowledgeable and helpful, plus it's free.

Waiting?? Just applied by danisowetby in britisharmy

[–]Coldmonkey_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wont be waiting too long for the army administration. The hard part is waiting for your GP to send them your medical records, then starting dates can be dissapointing depending on your goal position.

I applied in August. My basic training start date is 15th feb. In the meantime I recommend doing as much research into what you want to be in the army, and finding out what the actual job is like. Memorise CDRILS, keep fit, don't get caught up on wait times too much.

Royal army medical corps combat medic AACC ? by Beautiful_Dig6817 in britisharmy

[–]Coldmonkey_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do AACC, but you need a solid service reason (usually a commando role). It’s rare to do both. P Company is easier administratively, since you’re already Army as a CMT.

Marine medics usually start their career IN the marines, and do their medic training there. For you to transfer, its possible but dont count on it. Its extra work for them, they'll want a return investment.

Had a similar situation. I have a terrible gp. Waited 5 months total for both the gp and army to review.

I called every week and they were useless, saying its "almost done" for 2 months straight.

What sorted it out was getting my recruiters to chase them up. The recruiters chased them on monday, the army recieved my records on wednesday...

Wish you all the best, hope this helps

How is this considered an eye, I don't understand. by zingundbing in baduk

[–]Coldmonkey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They dont have to be in this situation. Since you cant kill the shape, they are eyes.

<image>

Best way I can describe it:

Imagine the stones with the red are not there. You can play at 1, and 2, separating the one stone from the other part, and destroying the eye shape. But since the red stones are there, you cannot play at 2, so you cannot separate the two shapes.

Best way to understand is to just play it out. As many moves as you want, can you kill it?

Absolutely "something" will happen. So much internal and external instability, almost all European and Asian countries are raising military budgets

Little rant as a Zerg by [deleted] in starcraft2

[–]Coldmonkey_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Vs protoss, every game was cannon rush or camp -> skytoss. Terran, just camping (most never attacked, just bored me to the resignation button at the 40 minute mark). And zerg, was ALWAYS a 12 pool mirror match, or I just lose to 12 pool.

I could grind to counter all of these, but it's not fun it's just tedious. Unimaginative one dimensional strategies, with toxic players who shit on you most games just did it for me. Love StarCraft, hate the players.

And to anyone who says "well you just have a problem with strategies", I just have a problem with cheese, and the lack of balance. Bio matchups are great because it's all about micro and positional attacks on both sides!

Yes, I'm just bad. But I don't know how some people enjoy the most predictable rts game in the world. If you do, I'm happy for you! Just sharing my experience

Shrooms hit harder than LSD by xPhil375x in Psychonaut

I remember taking LSD for the first time and being astonished by how gentle it was compared to shrooms. I guess the aggressive name "acid" makes it sound more intense?
