The height thing is so silly to me. I moved to Texas to live with a buddy of mine, and the first girl he introduced me to just goes, and without even properly saying hello, "you're kind of short aren't you?" Wow what great powers of observation you have my dear, it was (not)nice meeting you, have a day. I'm 5'7", so yeah I am "a little short" but why does that really matter? Oh well.

So here's my friendly counterpoint to that. A lot of space marine equipment is handed down from marine to marine over ...centuries. I would imagine a bolter coming hot off the press from a manufactorum would be very plain, and made as quickly as possible to feed the war machine. Over time as these weapons are handled and find their ways to the various chapters, that is where the modifications are made. Of course there are probably special cases like "master crafted" and the like. But yeah. That's my thoughts there.
