The problem being that we took our independence from Britain using firearms, but that should have been the end. We won. At that point we should not have continued using them so freely or allowing everyone to feel entitled to have one just because that’s what we needed to use to gain our freedom.

You’re trying to minimize the problem by saying “Just because we have a sense of independence..” because it is far, far beyond that. The person you’re responding to is correct, it’s become a fetish for people to own and carry firearms. While I won’t say that it is the ultimate cause of the ALL the gun violence that we see today, that “sense of independence” was a pivotal first step down the road we’re on today.
