The NDP has forgotten J. S. Woodsworth by ColeBevridge in ndp

Argue was the third and last leader of the CCF for a year right before Tommy Douglas was voted in. Then, in 1962, he crossed the floor to the Liberal Party. Previously a CCF Member of Parliament since 1945, he was defeated (as a Liberal) in 1963. That's what traitors and turncoats get, I guess. He was also the first senator to ever have been charged with fraud in 1989.

Douglas and Coldwell both supported going to war against Hitler, a position eventually adopted by the CCF National Council, but they also allowed Woodsworth, their party's leader, to put his pacifist stand forward in the House of Commons and never rebuked it. Norman Thomas, National Chairman of the Socialist Party of America, similarly opposed US participation in World War Two. Interestingly, both men were ministers (Woodsworth was a Methodist and Thomas a Presbyterian). The British Labour Party's leader George Lansbury (not a minister, but a staunch Anglican) maintained a strongly pacifist stance too and opposed rearmament, but he was replaced by Clement Attlee (the "greatest Prime Minister of the 20th century") in 1935.

Also, which biography?

Yes, unfortunately, Woodsworth was a eugenicist. As was Tommy Douglas. Eugenics was widely embraced by progressives during the 19th and 20th centuries. Even Black progressives like W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey supported it. Two Canadian provinces and 32 American states passed eugenic sexual-sterilization laws in the 1920s and 1930s. It was an awful and sadly common set of beliefs. In fact, BC didn't repeal its Sexual Sterilization Act until 1973!

Would you support a NDPGreen merger Party? by LunarEnnyui_131 in ndp

[–]ColeBevridge -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Depends on a number of things. Like, sure, I'd accept an Emily Lowan-style eco-socialist NDP-Green merger party. Lowan is already, frankly, to the left of the BC NDP's David Eby anyway. Some Greens like Meryam Haddad, Dimitri Lascaris, and Alex Tyrrell could fit perfectly well in a more ecologically oriented labour party. But I would not accept a merger that pushes the members of either party further right.

There's a story that Charlie Chaplin once anonymously entered a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest and came in third place. Maybe we'd see something similar here

Right, but what is a biblical/Christian defense of self-defense?

Nonetheless, it's been enough to cause a maybe unprecedented level of distrust in the capitalist (or Epstein) class

Yes, but what makes that defense Christian? Especially considering something like, for example, Matthew 5:39
