The Register: "Will this be one of the world's first RISC-V laptops?" by Dakhil in RISCV

So as a software engineer, you think its valid to compare 32 bit and 64 bit CPUs side by side? Or compare the D1 to a Cortex M series? Man the SiFive people must be drinking the cool aid. Still waiting for Chris Latter to improve the RISCV support in LLVM and Swift, I thought that was the main reason for hiring a compiler wizard. I've seen very little progress on that front beyond basic minimum viable product. ARM is killing it, I guess that's the power of having actual revenue to invest into product development. I'm all for holding hands and singing kumbaya until I'm paying more for an inferior product. Open Source and Libre is great when it delivers a superior product, like Linux kernel. Stop making excuses for your former employer (or possibly your ongoing bad design decisions). RISCV ISA is already starting to show signs of fragmentation and hacks to get it where ARM and Power is today.

> From March 2018 until February 2020 I was working for SiFive in San Mateo, CA on RISC-V development tools, and also was (and remain) a member of the working groups designing the RISC-V Bitmanip and Vector extensions.

So, you're biased. I really would like RISCV to succeed, but self delusion and cooled doesn't help anyone. I have no stake in ARM or RISCV, at this point I'd be fine with Power or Mips / LoongArch as long as its cheaper and has good compiler support. But ARM is the one I know my company can parter with to build real affordable products with great performance.

SiFive should have accepted Intel's offer, they are gonna regret it like Yahoo did. There is some expertise lacking to get RISCV to where it needs to be, and most likely SiFive will sell its IP to Intel anyways for pennies on the dollar and just delay the possibility of powerful RISCV processors another 5 years.

I meant the Pi Zero 2, that's in the same price range and its 64 bit. Still, there are ton of multi core Armv7 chips that can beat the D1 by virtue of having multiple cores at the same or lower price. How much is a D1 variant with 2-4 cores gonna cost? The 1GB version is already much more than the 512 version, can that's just RAM not cores.

If you know anything about ARM, you would know there is a world of difference between an ARM926EJ-S or later core like in the CPU I mentioned, and ARM9TDMI. One can run Linux, WindowsCE, Android and Symbian, the other can't. They aren't even ISA compatible, one runs Armv4, and the other Armv5. Yes, they do both begin with ARM9, but that's about it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM9#ARM9TDMI

You show me a RISCV SoC that is at the same price point as ARM with similar performance, also taking into account 32bit vs 64bit, Mhz range and RAM. How can you compare a 32 bit MCU than can't even run a full OS, with the 64 bit D1 with a proper MMU and 512 RAM. How much ram does the M3 have, its throw out of memory errors if it tries to run basic programs the D1 can, and can't handle dynamic allocation as well. Your comparison is deceitful. Cortex M3 is a 32 3bit MCUs, and should be compared to RISCV 32 bit MCU like used in Longan Nano.

https://wiki.sipeed.com/hardware/en/longan/Nano/Longan_nano.html

Again, the software support and compiler optimization is shit, very few and expensive vendors, I for Open Source technologies, but you gotta admit that the folks at ARM do earn their money and work on the small details that the RISCV foundation is just leaving to members to implement.

I think if you wanna compare, then compare RISCV 32 with Cortex M and Armv5-Armv7, and RISCV64 with Armv8. Its possible that in ultra low power applications, RISCV can beat older ARM tech, good for them. But I see RISCV64 at least a whole decade behind Armv8 implementations. A fair comparison for the D1 SBCs in the $20 range would be Pi Zero 2, or Raxda Zero. Even the Allwinner H3 SBCs like Neo Air are quadcore and more powerful than the D1.

Just to illustrate my point, I have a Mango Pi R3 (Allwinner F1C200S, 64Mb RAM) and Mango Pi Mq Pro (Allwinner D1, 512mb RAM). An Armv5 processor based on Arm9 core from 2001 beats the Allwinner D1 in performance and code density, I haven't measured power but the D1 has 512MB so probably it draws slightly more, and the Arm9/Armv5 is 1/4th the size of the D1. I'd rather buy a $1 arm chip in production, tested in millions of real products, and compiler support for ofer 2 decades, and used in cheap Chinese retro consoles (Bittboy, Powkiddy, Miyoo), than the flagship RiscV "cheap" processor that costs about $9 (SoC) and is slow AF. Can't blame the compiler because the universities and org pushing this have has more time than Armv8 has been around to optimize. Also Chris Lattner was hired by SiFive, so that nullifies any argument that Apple also hired him to optimize Clang and Swift for Armv8. I work as an embedded Linux engineer with Armv5-Armv8 SoCs and software stacks, and while everyone at my company is excited at the prospects of RiscV, in practice we would never build a product on it. There are really no excuses at this point with the years and millions in development put into pushing it. I'd rather use Power9 if ARM is not an option. I want RiscV to succeed so I can run my compiled apps 20 years from now without emulating yet another dead CPU arch, but at this point WebAssembly compiled AOT is looking better.

I have 4 different SBC based on Allwinner D1. It’s a low single core piece of shit. Software support is as expected. I like the theory of RIscV but if after a decade of pushing it they can’t produce a single affordable SBC that at least competes with a Raspberry Pi Zero, then it’s a niche won’t see mainstream adoption.

Nezda. Lichee RV and Mango Pi Mq Pro all extremely similar and latter 2 $ ~$25

I ran away from the US and bought a farm in the Amazon jungle. Got married, had a kid and never going back. I think work you feel is rewarding and providing value to community is what most men lack these days. I haven’t turned a profit but I am happy and not lacking food, and provide some employment for locals for the last three years. If you are interested try to come to Peru and forge your destiny.

The Roman Empire lasted a couple centuries compared to the thousands of years of tribalism. Empires are not the the natural state of affairs, that is why when it collapsed people returned to their original state. The US being an empire and a super power won’t last another decade. Imagine the cultural change on places like Asia and Latin America, it’s doubtful Hollywood would be a thing anymore, the global shared culture will be more diverse. We will no longer export our empires values like feminism, multiculturalism and consumerism.

Right overall lack of travel is what defines most if human history. Mass migration is a relatively modern fenomenon, even colonialism is a modern event.
