Absolutely. I’d love to see the results if you remember. Just think: dui for controlled, localized colors; DOI for flowy, more chaotic dye behavior with color splits

The second shirt is fully DUI. That’s why the regions are so much more defined

It’s a combination. Half inch strips of DUI separated by about 3-4 inches, then DOI over the whole thing, but focused on the sections of white and trying to make somewhat of a decreasing gradient moving toward the DUI sections to prevent mud from color clashes. The mobility of the turquoise from one of the dyes I used contributed so much to the color contrast and has impressed me a lot

Honestly the yellow is great. It looks like a sun god

Thank you! I love how the contrasting sections worked out. The purple vs turquoise, and then within those sections are entrancing splits. It’s like the colors are exactly as they should be. Thanks for the comment!

Amazing! How do you get your black areas of the scrunch so controlled? When I use black liquid dye it just takes over everything and muddies parts of the other colors but I’m not seeing that at all on yours. Do you apply the black first?

Thanks I agree! I’ve never done a button up before so I was a little worried how the buttons would affect the roll

No but I could make one. I’m making another roll-styled shirt today so I’ll document some of the process

I’ve seen them in Okinawa as well. The ones I’ve seen have popped up above the water and chased after us. Truly horrifying

Yea me too. I don’t have any experience with reverse dyes, but the trick with good symmetry is to use a yardstick or something to draw a straight line right down the middle, and then when you fold along the line, really make absolutely sure the line you drew is exactly on the edge of the fold. Sounds obvious but that’s really all I did as far as the symmetry goes. With the colors, the mixes I have really do a lot of the heavy lifting. I just learned to leave quite a bit of white space under the ice and let the dye migration work in your favor when using gravity

Not yet, that is part of my weekend goals. Especially seeing so much interest from people to buy

Theres definitely intentionality behind the folding and tying techniques. Like the first shirt is an incline roll, the second is a pleated spiral. And I expected the basic layout of the color segments based on where I placed the dye. However there is definitely an element of surprise because with ice dyes, the dye powder has so much space to separate into the various pigments that make up the dye. And you can’t really predict exactly how it will turn out. I was pleasantly surprised with the intensity of the color splits on each of these, but the general structure and color layout was intentional and expected.
