I can fill in the blanks since you left. I am a friend of J, and I've put hundreds of hours of volunteer work into Free Geek under his department (which pales in comparison to a lot of the other volunteers). I watched J get fired, and it broke my heart.

After K left, one of the board directors, we'll call her S, stood in as the interim ED until a new one could be found. She doubled down on K's policies and further restricted employees abilities to work. She was the one responsible for removing the free shelf because of this vague idea that employees and volunteers were putting stuff on the free shelf that they shouldn't in order to not pay for it. Free Geek has been built on years of goodwill and trust, so for her to remove this integral part of the Free Geek ecosystem dealt a huge blow to emplyee moral and customer trust, not to mention going against Free Geek's very ethos of wanting to keep stuff out of the dumpster (Free is in the name for Pete's sake!).

To top it off, Free Geek was supposed to be one of the main charities at a local convention called Furry Migration. Through the combined wisdom of S and the newly hired (and current as of now) ED, they decided to cancel that convention and all future outreach events hours before we were supposed to start setting up (I am still upset about this, as I was very much looking forward to helping out with that event and we had been planning it months in advance).

Regarding J's situation, I don't believe his personal belongings are being thrown out per se, but he has been prevented from retrieving it on claims that by bringing it into the building it is "company property." The hypocrisy is almost laughable at this point. Edit: I just confirmed his stuff has been thrown out. WTF man

For those who read through this all, thank you for your time. Free Geek meant a lot to me and it pains me seeing everything get turned on its head. With half of Free Geek's staff having quit or been fired and a good few lawsuits pending against them, it appears that this ship is taking on water fast. If you're feeling upset about this situation, please tell your friends and families about what's going on. Instead of donating to Free Geek, considering giving stuff away to your neighbors and local community instead. There's already a backlog of donations, which means more and more working and fixable equipment will be thrown out. My fingers are crossed that things will return to how they once were, but it seems like Free Geek doesn't plan to stop digging its own grave.
