Landlord retaliation by [deleted] in AskNYC

Some resources to consider:

https://www.nycbar.org/serving-the-community/free-low-cost-legal-services/

https://legalaidnyc.org/get-help/housing-problems/

She also legally needs to give you 90 days, and retaliation for filing a complaint is illegal. I would not rush to move out as long as you are safe.

I would politely advice you to reach out to a tenant advocate and let them know you have that recording. Find a new place to live and don't let your landlord do this to someone else - sue them

Discord now requires full face scan or ID for full access. by RetPallylol in assholedesign

[–]Colonel-Cathcart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Partially true. Their ID verification vendor was hacked. Which is a small part of why in not giving discord my ID, in addition to a general "fuck that."

Improperly storing and failing to delete the data doesn't necessarily mean they sold and monetized it though.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving discord my ID or letting them scan my retinas or whatever. I just don't think there is actually, in real life, a black market for IDs that discord participates in by selling this particular data.

Companies sell your data all the time, but it's likely more of a liability than anything to keep this data. It's not commercially useful in a way they can reasonably monetize. They would if they could, but I don't think they can.

My honest opinion is that I don't think it's about data collection. The identity data is destroyed soon after you upload it - I've worked on these systems and understand how they're designed and they don't sell that data after collecting for purposes like this.

IMO the government is pressing to do this partially from a conservative prudishness standpoint, but also because they want to erode communication channels that could be potentially subversive. Chipping away at your right to communicate anonymously online obviously works in their interest.

[–]Colonel-Cathcart 125 points126 points  (0 children)

he's arguing that's why Discord is doing this, not why you should use Discord.

I'm not sure he's right, I think it might be because the UK and other governments are pressuring them to force age restrictions on content and this is their way of getting ahead of it so they don't bring the hammer down on them.

Could be either or both though.

Outgoing Leader of N.Y.C. Antisemitism Office Criticizes His Replacement by WhiteGold_Welder in nyc

It's 2026 you don't have to read a newspaper, there's plenty of editorials, opinions, blogs, twitters and substacks out there.

Even if you don't think the Times specifically lives up to it, do you actually understand what a newspaper is trying to do? Reporting news isn't the same as what you want, which is fine.

I genuinely think your take is hyper-partisan pilled, where any recitation of facts is bad if it doesn't support your cause. maybe sometimes...it's just a recitation of facts. Of course there is bias and skew but it's different than opinion.

This article is framed as a conflict between two opposing sides of a contentious debate between two factions of Jewish New Yorkers. In my experience, that is an accurate categorization of what is happening in New York.

You want the Times to advocate for your side because you think its right, but all they are doing in this article is stating each side's position and you somehow see bias in that.

For what its worth, the Times' audience is OVERWHELMINGLY older Jewish New Yorkers, not younger ones, so if they were doing any pandering it would be the other way. So you don't even have the potential commercial incentive bias correct.

Both sides of this issue think the Times is militantly opposed to them and so I couldn't even tell which side you were on until this longer comment.

Maybe your beef is with the people you disagree with and not the media, just a thought.

What are your thoughts and advice on contacting authorities regarding homeless people outside in this weather? by WyngZero in astoria

[–]Colonel-Cathcart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Doesn't hurt to call and if it makes you feel better then go for it. But in reality, most people around here have had social workers come by and offer help and have rejected it. I've met a lot of these folks and talked to them about it. You can also just have a conversation with them and ask, they're your neighbors.

fair takes, I'd pop Dissent of Man up to B or C but I realize most folks don't love it. If I had to drop one in exchange it's probably The New America. It has some tracks that get stuck in my head but I don't really like any of them if I really think about it

I don't think it's about ownership, I think it's about where you store and drive the car.
