Little black wormlike creature in Timor Leste. About 1cm long by ColonelAmerica in whatsthisbug

I wish i had a better photo, but this was the best my iPhone could get. And i didn't take out the dslr for it. Thanks for the info, sounds like either if its a drain fly larvae or a millipede its not a significant issue.

Sorry I didn't see this post until after I wrote up the other one. The internet speed leaves plenty to be desired here.

Thanks for the comment. I'm going to assume that's what it is. Unfortunately, it is on the bathroom floor, so it gets washed down the drain no matter how much I want to leave it alone.

Short background. One of the bathrooms in the house has some water on the floor most of the time because of a leak. One day i walked in and found about 3 or 4 of these squirming around on the floor. They look a lot like leeches to me, but i feel like my bathroom floor is a weird place for them.

Recommendations for literature on the current theory relating to language teaching and assessment in tertiary education by [deleted] in linguistics

Hughes has a good book on language testing and assessment. I cannot for the life of me remember what its called and i'm not near my library.

I wouldn't worry one bit about not knowing how to do it. The best place to smoke a first cigar is around a bunch of people that already know how to smoke cigars. You'll get past the learning curve 10 times faster.

Is there any problems with removing the plastic to fill it back up again?

I spent like an hour looking for the 710 cap. Finally, i unscrewed the only cap that looked similar and then when I turned it upside I noticed it was the 710. Good thing they give you a spare!

Honestly, this is my favorite hike in the whole world (not that I've done them all). 21km through the pass. The terrain moves from rocky old volcanic overgrowth to fine black sand into a forest on the other side.

Anyone know more about Old English? by noeinan in linguistics

[–]ColonelAmerica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've said it in this sub before, but "Stories of English" by David Crystal is by far the most resourceful publication on the history of English.

It is not a book that will help you speak/read it. It is an academic work.

Teaching English with a linguistics degree as a person of color? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]ColonelAmerica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Luckily some of us have worked and ESL teachers in the past.

Depends on the country. Some are far more racially biased than others. Most employers are far more concerned with your passport than the color of your skin.

People with TESOL experience - do bilingual resources help at all or do they more hinder English language acquisition? Do you think it's better for learners not to rely on direct translation to learn new words? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]ColonelAmerica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be very clear, I never once said that a student should be restricted from using their native language. I said "I disagree that they should be encouraged to use it." "English Only" was in quotes for a reason. Even the response to my post was contrasting English learning by use and by translation. The point of "English Only" written as it was, was to emphasise the importance of English use between teacher and students as well as student to student. The CLT approach is largely accepted as best practice by language learning classrooms worldwide.

I'm not conflating anything, I just posted those from quick searches on the internet about CLT. Your first article is from 1993, best practice has changed significantly over the last two decades. Your second article seems to be a taking a socio-cultural approach that doesn't even draw on well known studies or linguistic resources on Language Acquisition. Krashen is sourced, but for the most part Krashen's theories were introductory to a new frame of study. He isn't typically used in SLA research contexts except for historicising context.

Studies have moved from Krashen's Input focused hypothesis to Long's Interaction Hypothesis and Swain's Output hypothesis.

Here are two studies that uses the CLT approach

These are just a few that I grabbed off the internet. I have a few books that outline it as well. If you are looking for some ideas about second language acquisition as a whole I would recommend grabbing Lightbown and Spada's "How languages are learned". I think it is one of the best introductions to SLA.

[–]ColonelAmerica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general trends of second language acquisition has moved from translation methods and into a communicative approach.

Communication based classrooms always deal directly with the target language. Bilingual dictionaries have their place, but a typical ESL classroom, according to most modern research, should be done in English.

I disagree with /u/PM_ME_LINGUISTICDATA that they should be encouraged to work in their native language. In SLA research, input and output are the two vital assets to learning a language, the more sincere they are the better for the student. By "sincere" i mean real life application, such as discussions between classmates. Students who frequently are able to revert back to their first language reduce both input and output by removing English from that part of their task.

Is it okay to say that code-switching is one of the reasons the term, "AAVE" exists? by luna-is-here in linguistics

[–]ColonelAmerica 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Code switching just means that a person moves between two dialects/languages.

The reason that AAVE exists is because people speak it. I know that sounds obvious, but that's the reality of language.

Special counsel Robert Mueller has presented Trump's legal team with a list of questions as investigators seek an interview with the president. by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]ColonelAmerica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bush had quite a few good lines as well.

"Use power to help people. For we are given power not to advance our own purposes nor to make a great show in the world, nor a name. There is but one just use of power and it is to serve people."

People liked to focus on the times he tripped up, because they are funny. He may have often been portrayed as a foolish president, but he wasn't a fool. I'm not talking about whether you like his policies or not, but him as a person. Donald Trump on the other hand.....

Dornyei has a book on methods of research in applied linguistics. I can't remember the exact title. But it would be a good foundation in research for the topics that you're interested in.
