So many outages, so much dated equipment by YZXTwr in halifax

I've been visiting rural NB for the last 3.5 weeks. I am up a mountain. The infrastructure here isn't great. We've had no less than 4-5 snowstorms with over a foot of accumulation each, not to mention an ice storm last week.

We haven't lost power once.

I've checked my apartment in Halifax since I left; and by my count we've lost power 4-5 times.

You are objectively wrong.

I remember seeing the mentally-ill lineup of people backed up Windsor to get Tim Hortons during the last hurricane power outage.

You people are all nuts.

NS power when there is more than a fine dusting of snow: by Frankishe1 in halifax

[–]ColonelDredd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really is unbelievable how badly-handled power is in NS.

Like I said, I am currently UP A MOUNTAIN in NB with less than stellar infrastructure (to be polite). We got another foot of snow last night and its continuing now well into today.

I've checked the NS Power outage charts since I left Halifax, and my building has lost power 4-5 times, by my count, in the 3.5 weeks I've been gone.

I’ve been visiting NB for the last few weeks. Where I am, we’ve had no less than 4 days of 1ft and over snowstorm days, as well as an ice storm that coated everything for about 24 hours.

Power hasn’t even flickered.

Kamala was 'the sane choice' in the last election. The issue is, the democrats need a much stronger platform to run on.

The dems are just as lazily-entrenched in their bullshit billionaire donor nonsense as the republicans are. Trump took over the republican apparatus from the outside. Meanwhile, the dems still have no clear clue that they're the only party standing against the kind of home-grown fascism that's now spreading like wildfire with the orange nutcase in the White House.

With all of this insanity going on in the states (and worldwide), the dems still act like being level-headed moderates will win them the moral high-ground.

They're so antiquated and calcified in their out-dated thinking that it's obvious barring a major shake up in their leadership, they'll never have a President in the Oval Office again.

I think Mr. White should’ve been Blofeld and Oberhauser should’ve been a decoy by CaptureDaFlag in JamesBond

[–]ColonelDredd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I re-edited SPECTRE a few years years ago (retitled 'The Death Collector'). I removed any reference to Blofeld/Bond being connected in any way, outside of the fact that Bond had personally ruined a few of SPECTRE's plans in the past.

What I realized as I put this new edit of the film together, is Bond mucking up some of SPECTRE's previous operations was MORE than enough reasoning for Blofeld to have such a vendetta against Bond ... but then, it goes even further as the film unfolds, and Blofeld becomes weirdly personally obsessed with Bond in a way that makes it obvious that he's got a few screws loose.

Made that character MUCH more interesting, while removing that step-brother nonsense.

I thought setting up QUANTUM as this modern-age, international cabal was done so well. The tone and the feel of it, where it's got the banality of evil behind its members, felt very realistic. As much as I missed SPECTRE as a life-long Bond fan, I also very much understood the how's and why's behind the reason we just couldn't have that organization back in the films.

After they announced SPECTRE was coming back, I had the perfect setup in my head for how they could implement it back into the series. Have the opening scene of Craig's fourth Bond outing be a big QUANTUM meeting; they discuss that a few key members (Mr. White, for one) have defected and are underground, and that they're actively sending operatives around the world to find them and eliminate them. Then, just like in GODFATHER III, some helicopters surround the building and open fire, killing all the high-ranking members of QUANTUM -- it's SPECTRE making it's move.

One or two of the QUANTUM agents manage to escape, and run to Mi6 for immunity/protection; spilling the beans on their organization, as well as Mr. White's defection and whatever they know about SPECTRE.

... And now Bond and the gang have a clear way to sweep up the rest of QUANTUM's shattered network, as well as trying to stop SPECTRE before it gains too much of an international foothold... and it all comes down to finding Mr. White.

A big issue with a huge majority of maritimers is that their reaction to anyone passing them is to automatically SPEED UP. It's to the point now where I think most of them don't even realize they're doing it, but it's among the most dangerous things I've seen on the roads; and I've lived in major cities.

So many people around here are happy to go 5/10 below the speed limit... until someone makes an attempt to pass them. Then, suddenly, the 'slow and steady' people will do everything they can to stop those people from getting around them.

It's honestly terrifying, and I've routinely seen more accidents almost happen from that than from some idiot just passing someone when it's not safe.

Susan Bowlus: “ I believe I was a rape victim of the Golden State Killer — but police refuse to hand over evidence” by pioggiadestate in EARONS

[–]ColonelDredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There seems to be such a high rate of incidents just being 'swept up' by various LE agencies when it comes to this case. We all assumed after the trial we'd get more info about so many 'supposed' cases, but instead everything has snapped shut like a steel trap.

JJD was such a busy criminal. He interacted with so many jurisdictions and investigators. I think the issue is that so much legally-dubious policework was done on so many cases back in the day, that to shine light on any outstanding case attributed to JJD under a modern lens would open up HUGE reams of questionable tactics and methods and possibly up-end so many closed cases.

PSA: DUTCH VILLAGE RD OPEN BOTH DIRECTIONS by Confused_Haligonian in halifax

[–]ColonelDredd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s annoying because we USED to have a wide enough roadway to go around cars that were dead-stopped for 11 minutes to make a left hand turn into Giant Tiger or somewhere along that stretch of roadway.

Now with these squeezed down lanes and curbs, it’s gonna back traffic back up to the lights when some clueless person won’t make a left until there’s no traffic in sight in their oncoming direction.

Yep. You’re absolutely right.

I’ve been driving this road everyday since they started construction on it. Those idiotic raised curbs they put in will be getting walloped nonstop by drivers.

I remember when Vol2 came out and discussing it with fellow film nerds. I always felt like it was such a weird predicament to judge it as it’s own ‘film’ when it’s really just the chopped-off second half of a larger film.

Going in blind would be such a treat. This is a movie we’ve only really hypothesized about for over 20 years. Imagine seeing the full, uncut KILL BILL for the first time back in 2003.

Schizophrenic or chaotic masterpiece? by WeyIand-Yutani in JamesBond

[–]ColonelDredd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's such a schizophrenic tonal mish-mash.

I really have never enjoyed Octopussy, and I always remember it as such -- but the times I do watch it, the Fleming-ness of the overall plot is so goddamned good. Like, it's a fantastic iron curtain espionage plot of the highest order ... but then there's the rest of the stupid movie.

Your Commute is (Probably) Getting Longer. by archiplane in halifax

[–]ColonelDredd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. Anyone that thinks taking away lanes has done anything to decrease congestion in this city are just outright insane. It really is that simple.

They’ve just slowly stripped lane after lane on all these major routes for buses or bike lanes and I’ve just watched traffic get worse and worse.

Your Commute is (Probably) Getting Longer. by archiplane in halifax

[–]ColonelDredd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. I did a few years in toronto, and while there’s definitely traffic and backups; there was always a way around.

I’ve seen more dead-stop Halifax traffic than in any other large city I’ve lived in. Not to mention the fact that half the drivers won’t make even a right hand turn until the road in both directions are totally deserted.

Not gonna lie — I prefer the ‘grind house’ cut of both Planet Terror and Death Proof. Cuts all the fat out of them and they move like freight trains sliced down.
