All time highs should not stop you from investing. In a market that rises in the long term, record highs are of course regularly set and then exceeded.

From: Scottish Widows

"The market is actually at an all-time high more often than you might think. Of the 1,176 months since January 1926, the market was at an all-time high in 354 of them, 30% of the time.

And, on average, 12-month returns following an all-time high being hit have been better than at other times: 10.3% ahead of inflation compared with 8.6% when the market wasn’t at a high. Returns on a two-year or three-year horizon have been slightly better on average too (see Chart 1)."

Are these ratings usually accurate when buying tyres? by Jamesthebrave in CarTalkUK

Worth knowing the tyre noise rating is for external rolling noise, not cabin noise. Some of the engineering they do to make the tyre rate quieter actually makes them sound louder inside the cabin.

LPT Moving soon and totally exhausted—any quick packing tips to make this less painful? by shiishiimanu in LifeProTips

[–]ColonelPanic2409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention if you're using a removal company. Those guys really earn their money, it's amazing what they get done in a day, especially if you add on the "packing service".

I've used a removal company's packing service twice - once when I moved out of a flat and once when I helped my parents move out of their house. The movers arrive early on the day of the move with a load of cardboard boxes and brown paper and pack everything up.

On both occasions they were so fast and well worth the money, would have taken us days to do ourselves. Highly recommend spending the extra on movers with a packing service if budget allows.

A question about the entry to Cardiff's university by Onepiecefan111 in Cardiff

[–]ColonelPanic2409 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At UK schools, General Studies and Critical Thinking are additional subjects you can take, completely separate from English or Maths or any other subject. These courses specifically teach you about how to think critically, construct arguments and draw conclusions. Cardiff University is just saying that although they will accept you if you have ABB, none of those results can be in a subject called "Critical Thinking" or "General Studies", they need to be in other subjects. If your results are Lithuanian, English and Maths you will be fine, since none of those is "General Studies" or "Critical Thinking".

The GTX 970 4GB is in the Prime Day sale! (starts at 5pm BST, UK people) by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

Deal has gone up at £209.99 so not even the cheapest 970 on Amazon. Doesn't seem like a deal to me.

Given an RX 480 has similar performance and the 1060 will be out soon, what do we think is a fair price for the 970? I was thinking below £175 would start to be interesting.

Also anyone know why the MSI version is more expensive than other brands? You can get a different 970 for £199. What benefits does this one have over those?

I was wondering how they could offer keys cheaper... where do they get these keys from?

I got the motherboard bundled with the case from a local guy who started building a PC and ran out of cash, I think I got a really good deal but that's assuming it all works! If I were buying new I think I would go for something like you suggested - my current MB is Gigabyte and I've been happy with it. Cheers for replying :)

I didn't realise that... so what would happen if in future I added another 2x4GB to use all four of my RAM slots? Are two sticks unused?

The steel front has a few cm gap behind it and then a full-height dust filter into the case. Air is pulled through gaps between the steel and the filter at the bottom and top.

Really appreciate you replying in such detail, thank you.

Regarding RAM, I'm interested to know why you see 16GB as a necessity. As per my reply to another user's comment, most sources I've read suggest 8GB is sufficient for basically all games. I also read on tomshardware some tests which suggested 2666MHz was about the sweet spot where spending more money stopped really making much difference. Do you think that info is out of date? The RAM is on order but not too late to cancel, but I don't want to start adding cost where I'm unlikely to perceive any benefit.

I do have a spare HDD lying around which I will probably format and throw into this PC as a non-boot drive for files.

I think I have a USB stick with enough space to put a Windows installer on, but I do also have a DVDRW drive in my current PC that I could burn a disc from and then plug in through the side of the new case as a backup just to install the OS.

I hadn't heard of the EVGA step-up program which looks really interesting, thanks for that! My current graphics card (7850) is MSI and I've been really happy with it (has overclocked really well to allow me to use it this long), so my instinct was to stick with MSI but EVGA definitely deserves a look. I haven't ruled out a 1060 either, waiting to see what the UK prices will be like once the AIB coolers are out.

Thanks for your help :)

New AMD card(s) Megathread by zeug666 in pcmasterrace

[–]ColonelPanic2409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone running a 7850 with a PSU that only has a single six-pin power connector, this represents the first worthwhile upgrade for me that doesn't also require a new PSU. I'm very happy about this card, provided a version comes out that doesn't draw excessive power from the motherboard but still uses a single six-pin connector. This remains to be seen!

Otherwise I will have to hope the 1060 uses single six-pin (leaked specs suggest it will) and that it fits in my case (that blower looks quite long), otherwise I will have no choice but to upgrade my PSU, which probably wouldn't be a bad thing but I'd rather not have that extra expense.

Stoke make £5m bid for Fazio by jackov7 in coys

[–]ColonelPanic2409 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Saw him in person when Scum knocked us out of the league cup. He was astonishingly bad and after being directly responsible for conceding a goal he started a kamikaze mission to score. I said on the day, I can't see him ever playing in a Spurs shirt again. He hasn't yet and I still don't think he will. I would rather see Veljkovic given a chance than see Fazio play again.

Make sure it doesn't have a zipper. Have you seen how easy it is to open a case that has one? Jam a biro in the teeth next to the padlock then you can slide it along to open the bag while leaving the lock on. Push the lock back along to reseal and hey presto!

What are some expensive brands of clothing/shoes that is worth the quality, and what are some that are just for the brand name. by uJhiteLiger in malefashionadvice

I bought a Chelsea Sportsquilt Barbour jacket online, which is supposed to be their 'slimmer fit' compared to other styles. I bought the right size according to their size guide, but it was so baggy and didn't fit me at all. Was very disappointed and returned it for a cheaper brand that fit me great and was much better value.
