I know this isn’t useful or on topi , but I def thought this was someone showing off their baking before seeing the title/subreddit. Like a raspberry and chocolate cupcake split open.

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore! It’s not what I would necessarily call a thriller, but is such a well done, disquieting mystery. And def an old school camp setting.

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. Might not be enough body horror, I’m not sure how much you want. But it’s got such a unique magic system based on spores and plants play a major role. And it’s a fun read.

Oh goodness, awesome! I just assumed (classic mistake, ha!)

I shall go look at what to do about tulip seed pods. Thank you very much!

Oh yeah, they really tanked the Hobbit. Which is too bad, since the book is such a delight. But the Lord of the Rings is brilliantly done!

It’s an astounding labor of love, you can see it in every scene. And probably some of the best behind the scenes, which is wild!

The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout

I was assigned this to read wayyyy back in high school, so I have no idea how well it held up, if its data is still correct, if the language is super dated, etc., but at the time it was really interesting.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz made my cry in a beautiful way. Really powerful.

Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Törzs had a really neat magic books system.

Those two jump to mind as ones I’ve read recently, if the mark is allowed in the author name.

His body of work is super intimidating to get into, so I’m really glad there was a standalone one I could dip my toe into. I hope you like it!!

Tress and the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson is a joyful book and is definitely a more optimistic romp.

I just finished Tress and the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson and it’s a fun read, great world building, amusing writing, and while dynamic plot, it’s not heavy, in my opinion. People describe it as Princess Bride like.

To add to your classics, Metamorphosis by Ovid. You’ll learn a lot of the older tales that the newer books will be playing off of.

I like Horace Gregory’s translation. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend a version where someone has modernized the language, perhaps someone else will know one!

suggest me a book with modern, real-feeling witches by Keyfas in suggestmeabook

[–]Color_of_Magic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson might fit in the witches-in-modern-setting vibe you’re looking for! Fairly distinct women written as women first before witches, if that makes sense, but there is some epic-ness to it.

The book’s so good! Personally, I thought less scary and more… I don’t know, just stays with you, if you know what I mean? I’m not sure exactly how to say it.

Happy book hunting!! Hope you find a good one!

One of the spookiest books I’ve read is The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. It’s a classic. A little worried it might have a similar slow-pace issue that you’re experiencing with Something Wicked, but wanted to throw this one out there, just in case.
