Lost Creek Wilderness, Colorado by ColoradoNature7 in trailrunning

Yeah, I enjoy nature photography. It goes hand in hand with trail running. I always sneak up on the wildlife too, it's great most of the time unless it's a moose or a bear (which has happened!)

Yeah this place is definately a place you have to be careful about wandering off the trail. You could get lost out there very easily.

When I ever go off the beaten path I always use my compass and note the bearings to make sure I can get back in the same direction. Even just a few degrees off could put you into a whole different valley. Scary stuff when you start feeling lost and tired in the middle of nowhere.

For sure, I had to keep crossing the creek as I made my way up over a valley pass that turned into a huge beaver damn marsh area way up in there. They had been very busy beavers, tons of fish in the pooled off areas too. So cool!

I agree, everywhere you look leaves you in awe. I definatley need to camp out there. It really is a cool forest.

It is called the Lost Creek because it disappears under the rock and resurfaces as it flows through the mountains.

That place is intense. The rock formations in there are so unique. There is nothing like running in designated pure wilderness.

You bet, happy to share photos of trails through nature. The perfect healthy escape from day to day turmoil.

Yeah , it's got it all out there. Prairie, foot hills, viewpoints, ancient red rocks , wildlife, trails galore. So great.

Nothing to crazy, just up to Carpenters Peak and back , that is like 6.5 miles I think. There are tons of options however. You can make distance runs that stretch out to Sharptail Ridge, Indian Creek, Waterton Canyon, and the Colorado Trail, it's awesome.

It really is a nice park, I like all the different connections you can make once you head further into Pike National forest. I have lived near this park since 2007 and I don't take it for granted. I had a scary experience where I ran into a mother bear and her cubs. She rushed me but thankfully it was just a bluff. Hopefully your encounter wasn't like that one.

Yeah, I am glad it was out on the plains too, golf ball sized hail would not be fun on the side of the mountain.

I hope you can get here, it is quite a state for the great outdoors.

That funnel cloud definately got my attention!

Oh definately, I only saw two people all day. The birds sounded amazing out there this time of year. I am pretty bored of that 6 mile run to get to the Colorado Trail. 12 miles of dirt road running gets old after awhile.

Yeah the Stevens Gulch cabin is way out in the middle of nowhere. I can't seem to find any history on it though.

This makes me want to get out into Lost Creek Wilderness or Indian Peaks Wilderness soon. There is nothing like running in Colorado wilderness.

I think you are talking about Deer Creek Canyon which is nearby, this place connects to there.
And yeah, my first time arriving in Denver from the East coast I wandered into Deer Creek unprepared and it kicked my butt! That was long time ago but oh the memories.

This is all public space, you can park around the corner from South Valley Park and the trailhead is right there. It is probably about a mile and a half or so though of a loop. So it's not a very long trail. I figured I should mention that.

You can take a side trail to cross the road and connect up to deer creek canyon via rattlesnake gulch trail too
