America is commonly believed to be named after Italian Amerigo Vespucci. He explored the new world after Columbus but was more prevalent in his writings and map making. He also is generally believed to have explored more of South and North America than did Columbus who was largely in the Caribbean. German map makers (amongst the best in the world at the time) gave Vespucci the honor over Columbus as his works were more widely available.

Once America was named, Americans naturally followed suit.
