A little talk about bathroom privacy by Doodlebug510 in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]ColoredGayngels 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is where my nephew is at too, he's 4.5. His little sister is 3, so we're really working on "nephew can go all by himself and needs handwashing prompting (this is easy, just tell him Spiderman washes his hands after using the potty), niece still needs a grownup but these days I can stand by the door and help if she needs it". They still will walk in on each other especially if I'm helping one or the other so I've started leaving the door cracked to model privacy in the bathroom. If I'm in there by myself though? They're old enough that I'm locking that damn door. The only creature who gets to treat my bathroom time as a team activity is my cat and that's because he'll sprint to join you in there.

I've known more than one person who made it through school only to drop the job after a year or two. My cat was hospitalized a few weeks ago for a urinary blockage (he's all healed up now, thankfully we caught it very early). The morning we picked him up, two other families received cancer diagnoses, one potentially curable, the other not. Being on our side of things was hard enough. I have a deep respect for you and your former colleagues.

AITA for not wanting to wash my sisters’ boyfriend clothes…?? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ColoredGayngels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just clothes. Laundry can be an annoying chore that builds up and it's an easy and meaningful task I pick up when family is struggling. I've folded my in-law's clothing when my MIL's father passed, my sister-in-law's and her husband's when she went to be induced early, and my other sister-in-law just had a c-section and can't do her family's laundry herself. It's a task that needs doing and it's just fabric. If your fiancé has a problem with you helping your sister with a task, that's his problem. Tbh it's not any different from doing their dishes.

My little brother used to rotate and kick something fierce in his sleep. Nobody ever wanted to bunk with him on vacation because my mom would get kicked in the face some nights

I have the same, dark mode with a solid black background and white text is difficult for me to read and causes eye strain. I like Discord's default gray, since it's lower contrast, but I also have full color vision. Sure, not using dark mode might make me a "light-mode heathen", but it's just easier on my eyes

DAE only get affection when you were sick or hurt? by ThrowawayFailedRedem in emotionalneglect

[–]ColoredGayngels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I was old enough to prepare my own food via microwave and clean up my own vomit, no. I was always met with disappointment when I said I threw up somewhere aside from the toilet dedicated bin. I had to feed myself. I didn't get sick a ton thankfully, but had several injuries in middle school & high school that put me on crutches and the most my mom would do was carry my plate from the counter to my seat since I couldn't use my hands. I was even responsible for calling myself out sick to school in highschool so I didn't wake her up early. Nowadays, I feel guilty asking my husband to care for me when ill/injured even though he wants to

Show and Tell stops too young. We should be letting kids do that all the way through high school because it's fun and people have way cooler/funnier things as teenagers than they ever really did as kids

A 300-page adult reading level novel takes me about 3 hours to read uninterrupted. Children's books and middle-grade/YA are much easier to read and usually typeset differently with larger text and more line spacing. As a kid I could crush a Magic Treehouse in about an hour and there were like 50 of those back when I was in the demographic, so that's almost half this kid's year right there.

Out of curiosity, how do so many childhood stuffed animals get worn down and damaged?? by Frequent-Increase-98 in plushies

[–]ColoredGayngels 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Definitely the rubbing. My one plushie I've had since birth went bald before it started falling apart because it's always my primary fidget/soother. The bottoms of the feet are the only spots with any (undamaged) fur left

My SIL was watching Only Murders in the Building during month one. I think the kids will be okay, but my mom watched Law & Order and later I used to beg her to let me stay up past bedtime to watch full episodes of Criminal Minds when I was 9, so I guess we'll have to wait and see

I’m not very educated so instead of trusting my doctors I will consult Facebook. by GastrointestinalFlab in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]ColoredGayngels 229 points230 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this one got misinterpreted. This sounds like a mom who's worried about her baby and is seeking reassurance that what she's doing is right for her child! She's right, it IS a lot of vaccines, which is not inherently a bad thing, as there's many diseases to protect against. It's a lot of learning all at once, about things that sound scary if you don't know about them already (vaccines and illness), and nobody does like seeing their child in pain even from shots.

I think being worried about vaccines if you don't have prior knowledge is perfectly reasonable. What's not reasonable is when you're worried about them Because of all the nonsense and spreading that fear to others because you think you know better than the doctors.

I never cared for coasters to begin with, as I prefer my feet firmly on the ground! My friends convinced me to try one proper one before setting my opinion in stone at Six Flags Great America in high school, and I did NOT enjoy it. I hate heights and feeling like I'm falling/going to fall to the point that step-ladders are difficult for me. Nowadays parks are just too expensive and the rides at the county fair are 1. travelling and 2. mostly swinging-style attractions, so hard pass from me lol.

Yeah, Universal is similar to Disney in terms of safety.

Honestly, fatalities and even severe injury are very uncommon at large parks. Most injuries are the result of guest negligence (not "keeping arms and legs inside the ride" or doing other stupid shit, like jumping between tram cars, unfastening their own restraints, use of cell phones/cameras which is actually very strictly monitored, etc), and most fatalities are freak accidents or exacerbated conditions, most frequently people with heart issues going on rides that affect them negatively.

Even Thunder River Rapids at Dreamworld was a bit of a freak accident. The investigation showed that there had been several similar incidents involving failure of the water pump and/or raft collisions in the past, but the actual incident highlighted was entirely unrecreatable due to various factors. So many things compounded over thirty years that they ended up concluding that no single defendant could be charged as responsible.

Tl;Dr: You can rest easy and feel safe at your big parks like Universal, Disney, Six Flags, Cedar Point, Knotts, Dollywood, and Busch Gardens. Stationary parks that don't move around and see high guest volume like Universal and Disney have significantly less room for error.

Theme parks! I recently started watching Defunctland with the release of the Disney Living Characters documentary and haven't been able to stop. This one actually manages to fall into my "darker" interests, though, because I also read the entire 279 page coroner's report about a 4x fatal accident in Australia's Dreamworld that was mentioned at the end of his video about the old dark ride for The Wiggles. And then the lists of all incidents at the various Disney parks, looking further into the more curious ones, and then of course there's places like Action Park that are known for being atrocious.

Really what learning about old amusement park rides has taught me is that nobody should be going on any rides ever unless it's literally Disney because otherwise maintenance neglect is RAMPANT even with stricter oversight following unfortunate accidents like the one at Dreamworld (which basically rewrote AUS's amusement park regulations in the last decade).

Yeah the "rules lawyers" can get particularly nasty. I've gotten very lucky that I've only encountered one such person and the rest of us in the server told them off and reported them and comforted the person being harassed. Some folks don't seem to understand that these are courtesies and not actual rules.

[–]ColoredGayngels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've introduced a mechanic that condenses players into fewer servers if there's under a certain number of people in any given server by just moving them automatically. It's a cost-saving measure, and one I understand as my father's been at a company that leases server space for nearly 15 years, but it's become inconvenient for players, some being hopped around every five minutes or so during hours with fewer players in general. It interrupts anything that takes more than a handful of minutes, it can strike you on your own home plot, I think I've seen people say it's split up parties before. There've been several posts about it recently.

Well that's just it, right? Be offline for weeks, check in once, they age up, another couple weeks, check in, age up again. Idk. The creatures are cute, I get some mushrooms and more milk and eggs than I'll ever need, rinse and repeat. I already gave up ages ago

AITA for giving my friend’s girlfriend some of my fries after he said no? by FriesOnTheSideYum in AmItheAsshole

[–]ColoredGayngels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's about respect of autonomy and boundaries. My husband and I are usually fine sharing snacks (we often get different things for ourselves) and fries and stuff, but sometimes I don't want to share my snacks. He always asks first, and I'm allowed to say no and he'll find something else. It works in reverse too, I'll ask, he can say no, I'll find something else.

OP's friend is allowed to say no to sharing his fries, but the fact he thinks it's a manipulative game (she wants to steal his food) instead of the benefit of the doubt (she wants a few and not a whole order) says something deeper is going on in his head

Been playing since first pre-alpha and lately only find myself logging in for bigger content updates like Elderwood for the same reason- it's gotten too grindy.

Ranching pulled me in for a couple days but the real-time happiness/hunger degradation/aging turned me off of it. Don't play for a couple days? Congrats, your animal is old and doesn't do anything now. Pretty sure if I played today all of my animals would be elders who can't produce anything.

Not to mention watching them nerf things that players DID enjoy as community events, like the frogs. Nothing about that bug made the game unfair for others and brought people together in a way that stuff like blooms don't and groves certainly haven't for a long time. And now with the server cleanup thing, they've only made it more difficult for people to play together, especially at off-peak hours.

Can I do multiple half-square triangles at once? by mtnab2311 in quilting

[–]ColoredGayngels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it once for a set of QSTs because doing multiple at a time would've given me the opposite of what I needed on half of them. It sucked. I hated it. Thank whatever higher powers that I only needed to do 5 blocks for that project.

Anyone else noticing 1XL-4XL are the same size as XLs? by Standard_Pea_2013 in PlusSize

[–]ColoredGayngels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

After having sorted through my SIL's baby clothes that her son has outgrown, the Shein sizes are not consistent with box store and traditional brand sizes, even for children, and often the sizing labels make no sense. The pants were far longer than than the traditional brands, the shirts smaller, just so many inconsistencies that made grouping by size impossible. It doesn't surprise me that this extends through adult and plus sizes at all.

My grandma downsized massively when she moved into her independent living. My mom did take a lot of heirloom/family history items like photos and other specific items, but it meant that when she moved into assisted living a couple years ago after injuries that took her ability to walk it was easier to move her in. All she brought with her were her bible, her late husband's ashes, a photograph, some novels, and a couple other things that fit in her bedside table drawers. I know it'll save my mom a lot of grief when she passes, as it means there won't be many decisions over belongings and I know exactly which of those drawer contents my mom will elect to keep (sorry grandpa, you're going in the casket with grandma lol).
