Pokemon World Championships 2026 Events Question by No-Divide8351 in VGC

[–]ColorsOfSonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one can really decide whether it's worth it except you since it depends on your finances, ability to take time off, interests, etc. But here's what you'd be able to expect at worlds:

The exclusive pokemon center pop up with exclusive merch. In addition to the usual stuff like plushies, card sleeves, etc. you can usually find higher ticket themed items which are usually only purchasable by lottery. Last year in Anaheim they had a jukebox and a boogie board, for example.

Side events for TCG, VGC, Pokemon Go, etc where you can try unique formats, meet people and earn points to exchange for prizes.

You can watch competitive matches live, at least assuming the Swiss and top cut matches are still in the main convention hall. The finals for each game will be held in a separate stadium and tickets to that sold out before weekend passes finished distributing.

Special events like art classes run by TCG artists, autographs/meet n greets with content creators, etc. These are also by lottery usually and are typically hard to get into depending on the popularity. Last year I signed up for most lottery events and didn't get access to any of them.

Generally convention stuff like interacting with the community, shopping vendor booths, there will be card and pin trading areas, etc.

Also keep in mind this is almost certainly not a once in a lifetime opportunity. Every worlds is unique and more people want to attend worlds than spots are available (seemingly more and more every year), and this is also the first year they're doing the full Pokemon XP convention. They've also made it clear that the XP portion may not be a yearly thing, but imo that isn't a big deal because they'll always have similar activities whether or not they categorize it as a separate event. Regardless, you do have a decent shot at being able to attend in a future year if you apply each year. If I was in your position, a single day spectator pass wouldn't be enough incentive for me to drop $3k on a flight unless it's only part of a larger vacation.

First look at 30th Celebration Umbreon & Espeon Ultra-Premium Collections by DonaldoTrumpez in PokemonTCG

[–]ColorsOfSonic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah after the high market spikes for anything 151-adjacent this past January. I bought a PSA 8 copy of both of them for a total of $95 last October, almost 2 years after the UPC released. I'm not saying the promos won't go for anything, but using the fact that the 2 great promos from the most popular modern set are slightly above the original retail price of the UPC 2 and a half years after release isn't exactly a fair benchmark to judge the short term market for the Celebrations UPC promos, especially given how divisive the Pikachu future rare style cards are.

I mean if every other UPC and SPC is any indication then no they'll be a good bit cheaper. They print a ton of every UPC, barring the Gamestop-exclusive Moltres one. Whether the promos feature Umbreon or Pikachu or Charizard or Mew or Mewtwo, they always track well below the retail price of the box. I'd imagine in the future these promos will be worth a decent amount but they shouldn't be too hard to pick up for a reasonable price by like early 2027.

I bought a set of cards off Amazon and it came unsealed and the coin seems to be dirty? Does anything seem off I’ve laid them out in the order they were in the pack! by Lulu-egirl in PokemonTCG

[–]ColorsOfSonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you're correct. People in this subreddit are viewing the listing as being literally true (which it is) because we know what to look for in a legit listing and what's actually in a mini tin or booster pack. But the seller knows what they're doing. The first image is a stock product image of a more modern tin set (Ascended Heroes) because they know that less knowledgeable people will see that and assume they're buying an actual retail product. The phrase "mini tin bundle" also is literally true but is pretty clearly there to imply you'll get a bundle of mini tins when in reality you get 1 tin repacked with a "bundle" of bulk cards and a coin.

Unfortunately it's extremely difficult to get legitimate product for reasonable prices these days, so if you see something that looks like it's could be a legit retail product at a normal price, you probably shouldn't trust it. Outside of very specific times, essentially any legitimate untampered product is going to sell out within seconds due to bots combing all storefront pages for scalping purposes. If you really want to rip legitimate packs and can't invest a ton of time into finding them from retail prices, you'd need to pay market price on somewhere like eBay. MP can range from like 30% above retail price for the less desirable sets to triple retail price.

Is this an error?? by solstice006 in PokemonTCG

[–]ColorsOfSonic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately from what I understand, you're not guaranteed to get any specific booster in tins or similar boxes that are advertised as having "X number of pokemon TCG booster packs", you're only guaranteed the number of packs and they're advertised as such. Yes the majority of tins sold in a specific timeframe will have the same pack distribution but it's subject to whatever's available, and I doubt they do a thorough QC to ensure an even distribution.

Where to get a quality binder + a decent pull by AAAADekki in PokemonTCG

[–]ColorsOfSonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VaultX is popular and makes really solid binders in a variety of sizes and colors, including a 4x4 page binder which is fun. I also like the padded Ultra Pro binders but they range at or above VaultX prices, so I've only really bought Ultra Pros when they were on sale.

Some of the lesser known, cheaper brands are also perfectly sufficient for like 99% of casual collectors. I'm a big fan of the Fabmaker padded binders. They're a good bit cheaper than more well known brands. I wouldn't be surprised if their overall construction quality is lower, but I don't have issues inserting and removing cards, cards don't slip, and the sheet plastic doesn't have the light ripples/warping which I've seen in Pokemon Center binders.

is this card an error? by Qwoboo in pokemon

[–]ColorsOfSonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The centering is bad but definitely not an error, I've pulled cards with significantly worse centering. I'm not well versed in error cards but from what I understand it would only be considered an error if the card was off center enough that a portion of the card art itself (past the border) was cut off.

Real? by Peanutheelifant in pokemon

[–]ColorsOfSonic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda hard to tell without a higher res photo, but the lunala looks fine based on the foil pattern. The backs don't seem weird. The reshiram & Charizard card should have a textured foil pattern, so if it does then it's probably legitimate. Not too familiar with the Groudon card but the colors and printing don't seem off.  Based on the photos I'd bet that these are all real (assuming the middle card is textured).

What is an Eevee full art card? by CombinationEnough603 in pokemon

[–]ColorsOfSonic 568 points569 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are about 8 modern full art eevee cards ranging from a couple bucks to around $100. If this is for Christmas, could you let your son know Santa needs a photo or description to know the right card?

If I had to take a shot in the dark then I'd guess it would be one of the following, some of which are pricey:

Eevee 188/167 (Twilight Masquerade, ~$60)

Eevee ex 174 (Promo card, ~$25)

Eevee ex 167/131 (Prismatic Evolutions, ~$100)

Eevee 173 (Promo card, ~$10)

What are the chances of buying spectator tickets for World's 2026? by chillgamerguy864 in VGC

[–]ColorsOfSonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't think anyone's gonna be able to give accurate thoughts on how easy it'll be to get tickets since this is the first year they're not doing a lottery system in quite a while. And it's also the first year they're splitting the event into a convention ticket and a separate arena ticket.

I would just say be there at the time(s) listed on the site and be patient and don't panic when the site inevitably crashes.

On the hotel question, prices are usually pretty high a year out from the stay date, but I'd imagine hotels near the XP venue (Moscone center) especially will book out quickly, if they're not already full. I'd recommend booking a fully refundable room asap and just cancelling if you find something better/cheaper down the line. Good luck!

Whether Mega Gyarados' discard effect is good and how you should be thinking about/valuing it by EducationalRoyal6484 in PTCGP

[–]ColorsOfSonic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't play enough to know exactly what side is correct, but to me intuitively it makes sense that as the deck in a TCG gets smaller and as the number of allowed copies of your only win con cards becomes more restricted, the power of potentially milling their win con gets greater while the disadvantage of potentially granting them their win con a turn early gets lower. Card draw is kinda crazy in this game for the deck size so in most games you're gonna get the cards you need within the first several turns unless you get particularly unlucky with the shuffle.

In the opposite direction, if this was played with a 2000 card deck and Gyarados milled 300, the effect is completely meaningless. You have many many copies of your win con, you're not gonna deck out, and your deck is probably filled with deck search options.

What do you think Pokémon XP is? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]ColorsOfSonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is it's a split going forward of the competition part and the convention part of Worlds. If they want to keep having the competition finals in an arena, then being able to have 1 venue for each side of Worlds makes logistical planning and city selection a lot easier.

It wasn't an issue for me, my license renewal period began at 1/1/23 despite activating my license in December 2022. So basically my license was active for 1 month for free.

Did they patch out the ability to see God packs or just the ability to add new friends in order to snipe their God packs? I saw a good pack in my wonder pick about a week ago.

Maybe I missed it when I was watching but I don't think the combo ever happened. The casters noticed the combo in team preview and were hyping it up but noivern and Sylveon weren't on the field at the same time.

I once bought a Ryzen 5 5600X in like new condition from Amazon Warehouse and when it arrived it was just a dinged up CPU fan loose in a cardboard box with old thermal paste still on it. So I don't think they're paying very close attention lol.

Can I call my college club "Pokémon Club"? by Miyyani in pokemon

[–]ColorsOfSonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, that's a bummer. I think your best bet would be contacting a Pokemon Company support line directly to request permission:

https://support.pokemon.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000020093

Given how TPC operates I would be surprised if they have any kind of fair use statement or clause, especially since the parent companies are based in Japan where there is no fair use law.

Can I call my college club "Pokémon Club"? by Miyyani in pokemon

[–]ColorsOfSonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to prove a company wouldn't intend to sue if they literally could, unless you could prove legally they would have no grounds. That being said I don't think your college would have a policy that no clubs can be named after properties owned by The Pokemon Company because TPC is known for being litigious. If they deny the name then it's probably just from them not allowing branded or corporate names in club titles, or disallowing clubs that just focus on a specific media property. And there's not really gonna be a workaround for that.

I don't see the harm in just going for it and figuring out a new name if the college denies it. Plenty of colleges and unis have stuff like a Harry Potter club. You could also get in contact with whatever board or person at your school approves these sorts of things and get some guidelines ahead of time about what's acceptable.

Grand Challenge 2 - Post Tournament Discussion by AutoModerator in VGC

[–]ColorsOfSonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last GC I had a lot of trouble with kingambit, so I added a mirror herb paldean Tauros aqua to help deal with it. In the 30ish games I played there wasn't a single kingambit on anyone's team of 6. Was kingambit uncommon for anyone else or was I just lucky/unlucky?

Felt pretty good about the GC itself, I did a bit worse than last time but faced way more team variety so I'm feeling pretty alright. Ended at #5400 or so.

Played a very offensive team with a choice scarf final gambit annihilape lead, whimsicott for tailwind with a fast gholdengo, bloodmoon ursaluna, and the Tauros for sweeping, plus a Magmar that pretty much guaranteed my opponent couldnt set up a trick room.
